A few days ago, my van was randomly vandalized — this video is of the young man that went into my neighbor yard alone and picked up the brick that he threw into my van window. I shared a photo of the person of interest on account, and the next morning, my frat brother S***t called to say he knew who did it. He reached out to the young man’s family and connected me with his grandmother.

Unfortunately, instead of acknowledging what happened, the grandmother questioned me as if I were the one on trial. She was quick to blame everyone else except the person responsible — the young man under her care — who has yet to take accountability for his actions. If the other kids hadn’t recorded what happened, they probably would’ve continued to deny his involvement altogether.

There are so many programs in our city that provide youth with support — programs that teach accountability, anger management, conflict resolution, and mental health awareness. Yet, too often, parents and caregivers don’t take advantage of these opportunities.

This is a message to all parents and caregivers: get your children involved in programs that help them develop respect, humility, empathy, and accountability. If we don’t start holding them accountable now, they won’t learn. And if they don’t learn, too many of our youth will continue down a path that leads only to prison or the graveyard.

Sadly, the young man who damaged my van is already facing trouble with the law. Let’s do better — for our kids, for our communities, and for our future.
