Don’t Leave Your Cat in a Car ‼️☀️

06/10/2026

The New World Screwworm was successfully eradicated from the United States in 1966 through a massive control effort. Recently, however, new cases have been identified near the southern U.S., prompting increased monitoring and awareness within the veterinary community.

Why is this parasite different?
Unlike typical maggots that feed on dead tissue, New World Screwworm larvae feed on healthy, living tissue. Wounds can become painful and enlarge rapidly, potentially causing significant damage if left untreated.

Cats, especially those that spend time outdoors or have open wounds, surgical sites, or bite injuries, may be at risk.

Signs to watch for:
- Wounds that suddenly worsen
- Foul smelling discharge
- Excessive licking or scratching
- Visible larvae within or around a wound

If your cat develops a wound that isn’t healing normally or shows any of these signs, contact your veterinarian promptly.

Keeping wounds clean, monitoring healing closely, maintaining year round prescription parasite prevention, and keeping cats indoors are all excellent ways to help protect your feline family members.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, our team is here to help.

All confirmed cases should be reported to the USDA
