🎉 Please join us in welcoming Daine Becerra, our new Operations Associate!

Daine immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico with her family at age four and grew up believing that being an immigrant should never limit her dreams. In 2024, she became the first in her family to earn a college degree, graduating from the University of San Francisco with a degree in graphic design. 🎓

Now she’s bringing that same drive to Upward Scholars. From welcoming students and visitors to keeping our office, events, and technology running smoothly, Daine will help make sure our learners have what they need to pursue their own dreams. 💙

We’re so excited to have her on the team! Drop a 👋 in the comments to give Daine a warm welcome!

Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day 🌎 🪶

Today, we honor the rich histories, cultures, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples and communities across the country.

At Upward Scholars, we acknowledge in particular the Ramaytush Ohlone, the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula, whose ancestral lands are where our community lives, learns, and works.

We take this opportunity to reflect on the importance of preserving cultural heritage, listening to Indigenous voices, and recognizing the traditions and knowledge that continue to enrich our communities today. 🧡

Recognizing World Mental Health Day 💙

For adult immigrant students balancing education alongside work, family, and the many responsibilities of everyday life, making space to reflect and care for yourself can be especially important. At Upward Scholars, we’re committed to supporting our students as whole people, both inside and outside the classroom.

Through sessions with Reverend Gerardo García Palacios, students have a welcoming space to talk about experiences such as grief, loneliness, faith, life transitions, and spiritual healing, either one-on-one or in small groups.

On World Mental Health Day, we encourage our entire community to check in with ourselves, make space for meaningful conversations, and lead with compassion for those around us. 🧡

Five years of partnership and one unforgettable night! 🎉💛

Thank you to Life Science Cares Bay Area for five years of support for Upward Scholars, and congratulations on raising over $420,000 at your Impact Festival last month to keep fighting poverty across the Bay Area!

We were so proud to cheer on our student and peer mentor Monica as she shared her story on stage. 🇵🇪✨ Monica turned her love for her grandmother's Peruvian pastries into a dream of starting her own business. Today she's studying at Cañada College, pursuing a marketing degree, and helping other immigrant adults find their path at Upward Scholars. Monica, you moved the room! 👏

Thank you, LSC, for investing in our scholars and helping their stories be heard. Here's to the next five years! 🥂

Celebrating International Translation Day! 🌍 🗣️

Language has the power to connect people, strengthen communities, and ensure everyone has the opportunity to be heard. Today, we recognize the formal and often informal translators and interpreters who make those connections possible.

We’re especially proud to celebrate Yeny and Brenda, Upward Scholars alumni whose work as Spanish coaches, translators, and interpreters has helped bridge communication gaps throughout the Bay Area, including at Puente de la Costa Sur (PUENTE), SV2 - Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the Marine Science Institute, Thrive Alliance, Deep Medicine Circle, and Upward Scholars.

Yeny and Brenda’s journeys show how language skills can serve, empower, and bring communities closer together. 💙

Welcoming Maria! 🎉

We're excited to welcome Maria Nguyen as the new Chair of the Upward Scholars Board of Directors! 🙌

Maria isn't new to this work. As a board member, she has played a key role in supporting our executive director transition and helped shape our next three-year strategic plan. Now, as Board Chair, she'll lead us in bringing that vision to life.

As an immigrant herself, Maria believes education, mentorship, and the right support can unlock opportunity for anyone, a belief that will guide Upward Scholars into its next chapter.

Help us welcome Maria into her new role! 🥳

Celebrating Latin American Independence! 🇧🇷🇨🇷🇸🇻🇬🇹🇭🇳🇲🇽🇳🇮🇨🇱

September is a meaningful month for many Latin American communities as countries across the region commemorate their independence and the histories that shaped their nations.
This month, we recognize Brazil on September 7; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15; Mexico on September 16; and Chile on September 18.

As we celebrate Latine / Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor these historic milestones while celebrating the cultures, traditions, and generations of people who continue to enrich our communities today. 🎉

Honoring Erika! 🧡💙

After seven years of service on the Upward Scholars Board, including as our Chair and President, Erika Pretell has completed her term. 🥹

Erika's journey with us started back in 2016 as a tutor. As Chair, she led our Board through the pandemic, steadied us through last year's executive director transition, and helped lay the groundwork for our next three-year strategic vision.

The good news? This isn't goodbye. Erika will continue to be involved with Upward Scholars in various capacities.

Thank you, Erika, for your years of leadership, heart, and dedication to our students and community! 👏
