Healthy Cities Tutoring helps kids who struggle to succeed in school. Program is located in San Carlos and serves students in the San Carlos Schools District.

Tutor/mentor program that provides one-on-one support to children in grades kindergarten through eighth with the help of community volunteers. During the 2011-12 school year program helped 159 students with the help of 150 volunteers.

Ever wonder what it looks like when a student meets their tutor for the very first time? Here’s a peek! Every new Healthy Cities Tutoring match kicks off with a “greet.” Our program coordinator brings the tutor and student together, makes the introductions, and gets them all set up and ready to rock their first session! 🙌This sweet moment happened at the San Carlos Public Library, and we can’t wait to see this duo shine! ✨💚

🌟 30 Years of HCT: From Tutor to Teacher

Sometimes one hour a week can shape more than a student’s future, it can help shape a tutor’s, too.

Over the years, Healthy Cities Tutoring has been proud to see volunteer tutors discover a passion for education through their experience working one-on-one with students. Seeing firsthand how encouragement, consistency, and individual attention can build a child’s skills and confidence has inspired some of our tutors to take that passion into the classroom.

📚 Brian Murphy has volunteered with HCT for 10 years. After retiring from a career in Small Business Community Engagement at Wells Fargo, Brian became a substitute teacher continuing his commitment to supporting students and giving back.

🍎 Taylor Ford began volunteering with HCT as a high school student and tutored for three years. Today, she’s a third-grade teacher!

We love knowing that HCT has not only helped thousands of students over the past 30 years, but has also given volunteers opportunities to build skills, discover new interests, and—in some cases—find a calling.

For 30 years, Healthy Cities Tutoring has been powered by people who believe in giving back to their community. 💙

Many of our tutors are familiar faces around San Carlos: civic leaders, public servants, and active community volunteers who know that making a difference can start with something as simple as giving one hour a week to a child.

This week, we’re celebrating two longtime community leaders who have also given their time as HCT tutors:

⭐ Mark Duri, former San Carlos Police Chief and 2-year HCT tutor
⭐ Tom Davids, former San Carlos Mayor and City Councilmember and an incredible 17-year HCT tutor

Their service looks different in many ways, but the spirit behind it is the same: showing up, building connections, and investing in our community.

Because sometimes one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen a community is one student, one tutor, and one hour at a time. 💚

🎉 30 Years of Healthy Cities Tutoring: Celebrating Our Teachers

Teachers are often the first to see when a student could use a little something extra - more time, more confidence, or simply someone sitting beside them saying, “You’ve got this.”

For 30 years, teachers have been essential partners in Healthy Cities Tutoring, referring students who can benefit from the consistent, one-on-one support of a caring tutor.

Megan Becht, Donna Becht’s daughter, a former HCT high school tutor, and now an SCSD Special Education teacher, beautifully described what that support can mean to a teacher:

“As much as teachers can do to teach all the standards…they see those kids who are struggling. And they wish they could do more.

And then they get the emails from Healthy Cities that the shy kid who looks terrified every moment she is in your classroom is matched with a kind tutor who will make her feel like she, for once, knows the answer. And the rowdy boy who talks about sports all the time so that people “don’t notice” that he still doesn’t know his multiplication facts, is already matched with a high schooler who is going to work on multiplication while they shoot hoops...

And as teachers, we breathe. We don’t stop worrying, but we breathe because they have someone — someone who is just THEIR someone… They have that ally.”

This week, we celebrate the educators who have been part of the HCT story as teachers, partners, advocates, and tutors themselves.

📚 30 Years of Healthy Cities Tutoring: Celebrating Our Librarians

For 30 years, school libraries have been more than a place for books, they’ve also been welcoming spaces where HCT tutors and students can sit side-by-side, build skills, and grow in confidence.

And often, right there in the background, is a school librarian helping make it all possible. 💚

At many of our San Carlos and Redwood City schools, librarians see our tutors and students working hard together each week, offering a friendly face to volunteers, helping them find a place to work, pointing them toward resources, and creating an environment where learning feels welcoming and supported.

Over the years, many couldn’t help but get involved themselves! They’ve volunteered as HCT tutors, encouraged parents to volunteer, and even inspired their own teens and family members to become tutors.

This week, we’re celebrating two wonderful examples:

📚 Linda Townsend — retired Arundel librarian and an incredible 24-year HCT tutor

📚 Katie Hultgren — Central librarian and dedicated 12-year HCT tutor

To all the librarians who have welcomed HCT into their libraries over the past 30 years: thank you for creating spaces where students feel comfortable learning, tutors feel supported, and our community feels welcome.

🎉 30 Years of Healthy Cities Tutoring: Celebrating Those Who Give Back

When the leaders of our schools choose to volunteer their own time as tutors, it says something special about the power of connection and community.

This week, we’re celebrating two longtime HCT volunteers who know firsthand the difference one-on-one support can make for a student:

💚 Ray Dawley — retired Arundel principal and HCT tutor for 9 years
💚 Betty Casey — retired White Oaks principal and HCT tutor for 10 years

After years spent leading and supporting students and teachers, Ray and Betty continued giving back — one student, one hour, one week at a time.

As we celebrate HCT’s 30th anniversary, we’re grateful for volunteers like Ray and Betty whose commitment to students has helped shape our story. 💚

From two students to a community-wide effort. 💚

In February 1997, HCT placed its first two students with volunteer tutor/mentors at White Oaks School. By the end of that first semester, 24 children had been matched with 24 tutors — and the program soon expanded to all seven San Carlos schools.

From the beginning, HCT was powered by community. An ongoing steering committee brought together representatives from our schools, city, police and parks departments, along with educators, business and community leaders — and even a student volunteer. Caryl Holloway served as its chair.

Thirty years later, so much has grown — but the heart of HCT remains the same: students and tutors building connections, one hour at a time.
