Absolute Freedom of Conscience

Among the principles most closely associated with Liberal Freemasonry, none is more fundamental than Absolute Freedom of Conscience.

Yet this expression is often misunderstood.

It does not mean indifference toward philosophy, morality, or the great questions of human existence.

It is not atheism, agnosticism, skepticism, or any particular worldview.

Rather, it affirms something far more important:

Every human being possesses the right—and the responsibility—to determine matters of personal conviction through the free exercise of reason, reflection, judgment, and experience.

No institution, however respected, possesses the legitimate authority to dictate what a person must believe concerning questions that belong to the domain of conscience.

For Freemasons of the French Rite, this principle creates the conditions necessary for genuine intellectual and moral development.

A Lodge is not a place where opinions are imposed.

It is a place where individuals learn to think more clearly, listen more carefully, and examine ideas with honesty and rigor.

Members may arrive with different religious beliefs, political perspectives, philosophical convictions, or none at all.

What unites them is not uniformity of thought, but a shared commitment to inquiry, mutual respect, and human dignity.

Absolute Freedom of Conscience is therefore more than tolerance.

Tolerance merely permits differences.

Freedom of Conscience recognizes the sovereignty of the individual mind.

It is the conviction that truth cannot be commanded, inherited, or enforced.

It must be sought.

And that search belongs to each of us.

Memorial Day is not merely a celebration of military history.
It is an act of remembrance.

Today, we pause to honor those who departed in service and never returned home. Behind every name is a life interrupted, a family forever changed, and a future left unfinished.

Within the philosophical tradition of Liberal Freemasonry, remembrance carries moral significance. A society that values liberty and human dignity must also preserve the memory of those whose sacrifices shaped its civic life.

Among the philosophers of the Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques Rousseau understood that a republic is sustained not only by laws, but by civic virtue and collective responsibility toward the common good.

The French Rite teaches that humanity advances through conscience, fraternity, and disciplined moral labor. In that spirit, remembrance itself becomes a duty.

We do not glorify conflict.
We honor human beings.

Today, Pacific Moon Lodge joins in remembering those who did not return.

May their memory remind us of the responsibility we share toward liberty, dignity, and one another.

Honoring Mothers, Celebrating Builders of Humanity

On this Mother’s Day, Pacific Moon Lodge extends its warmest congratulations to our Sisters who are mothers, and to mothers throughout the world.

Motherhood is among the most profound expressions of human devotion and responsibility. Through patience, sacrifice, wisdom, and steadfast love, mothers shape not only families, but the future of humanity itself. They are often the first teachers of compassion, integrity, discipline, and independent thought.

In the tradition of Liberal Freemasonry and the French Rite, we affirm that every human being possesses the capacity for reason, moral growth, and the continual improvement of self and society. Mothers play a central role in this noble work. By nurturing inquisitive minds and conscientious hearts, they help prepare future generations to live with dignity, responsibility, and concern for others.

To our Sisters who unite the responsibilities of motherhood with the Masonic journey of self-knowledge and service, we offer our deepest admiration. Your example reflects the quiet strength through which individuals, families, and communities are elevated.

To all mothers, everywhere, we express our sincere gratitude and respect.

May your wisdom continue to enlighten those entrusted to your care, and may your labor be recognized as one of humanity’s greatest contributions to progress.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Beginning in May, Pacific Moon Lodge will hold its labors in Redwood City, at the Odd Fellows Hall.

This marks a return—one that honors the past while continuing the work in the present.

Freemasonry has a long-standing history in Redwood City. In 1863, Redwood City Lodge No. 168 was established under the Grand Lodge of California, contributing to the intellectual and social life of the community for generations. In 2000, that lodge relocated to San Carlos, continuing its work as Peninsula Lodge No. 168.

Today, that tradition finds a new expression. What does this really mean?

Freemasonry has never been a single, fixed form. Across time and place, it has taken different expressions—each seeking, in its own way, to cultivate reason, integrity, and fraternity.

The return to Redwood City is part of that broader continuity.

Pacific Moon Lodge, under the Grand Orient of California, practices a form of Freemasonry that emphasizes:

Liberty — freedom of conscience as a guiding principle
Equality — the inclusion of all, without distinction of gender
Fraternity — a shared commitment to inquiry and human dignity

These principles do not replace what came before—they stand alongside it, as part of a wider and evolving tradition.

The place remains.
The work continues.
The forms may differ, but the purpose endures.

Beginning in May, our labors resume in Redwood City.

“A wise society teaches inquiry, not obedience.” — John Locke

At first glance, this feels obvious:

🔹A free society encourages people to think for themselves.

But from a Freemasonic perspective, especially within the French Rite, this idea goes deeper.

Inquiry alone is not enough.

Because if inquiry is left without direction, it can become:
🔹Thinking without responsibility
🔹Questioning without purpose
🔹 Freedom without clarity

Freemasonry doesn’t just encourage inquiry.
It teaches how to use it well.

🔹 Liberty — the freedom to think, question, and seek truth
🔹 Equality — every individual is capable of reason
🔹 Fraternity — truth is pursued together, not in isolation

But here’s the key:

🔹Freedom of thought requires discipline.
🔹Inquiry requires responsibility.

Because not all thinking leads to truth.

The goal is not simply to reject obedience, but to replace it with something higher:

Self-mastery; To think clearly. To question honestly. To act with purpose.

This is the work.

Freemasonry is not a system of answers. It is a path of refinement of the mind, of the individual, and of humanity.

If this speaks to you, if you value growth, thought, and meaningful purpose,

We invite you to learn more.

There’s a powerful quote by Ayn Rand that says:

“Racism is the lowest, most crudely primitive form of collectivism.”

At first glance, it’s a strong defense of the individual — and rightly so. No one should ever be reduced to a category, a label, or something they did not choose.

But let’s take it a step further.

From the perspective of Freemasonry — and especially the French Rite — the issue isn’t just about individual vs. group.

It’s about something deeper.

🔹 Liberty
Every human being must be free to think, grow, and define themselves — beyond imposed identities.

🔹 Equality
Not sameness, but equal dignity. Every person stands on the same moral ground.

🔹 Fraternity
We are not isolated individuals. We are part of a shared human journey — and how we treat one another matters.

Racism fails on all three.

It replaces reason with assumption.
It replaces dignity with reduction.
It replaces fraternity with division.

Freemasonry teaches us to do the opposite:

To see the human being before the label.
To think before we judge.
To build bridges where others build walls.

This is not abstract philosophy. It is a way of living — consciously, deliberately, and with purpose.

If these ideas resonate with you, if you’re someone who values thought, growth, and meaningful connection…

We invite you to learn more.
