Red Wing Sister Cities

Red Wing Sister Cities The RW Sister Cities Commission has facilitated the growth of friendships and cultural exchanges with Quzhou, China and Ikata, Japan since 1992.

Our mission is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding & cooperation. The Sister Cities Commission promotes cultural exchange between cities of different nations to foster strengthened economics, world peace and a greater understanding of the world issues. The City of Red Wing has two official sister cities – Ikata, Japan and Quzhou, China. The commission also has an informal relationship with Drammen, Norway.

Thank you so much Red Wing Lions.

We had some special guests share information about the Red Wing MN and Ikata Japan Sister Cities Commission. Red Wing and Ikata have been Sister Cities since the 1960’s; the link between them was the connection of both cities building nuclear power plants during the cold war era. This year 6 Red Wing High School students (with adult supervisors) will travel to Ikata and spend 10 to 12 days living with host families and being able to discover and enjoy cultural experiences. Two students shared their excitement and feelings looking forward to visiting new places and learning about the Japanese culture. Their supervisor shared information on the event; she also noted, after the Red Wing students complete their time in Japan, they will be joined by six Itaka High School students who will travel back to Red Wing and spend 2 weeks in Minnesota where they will enjoy the cultural experiences here, they will also stay with host families and will be in Red Wing during the River City Days, so that experience should be a lot of fun for all students. The Sister Cities Commission offers all students and the supervisors partaking in this event as well, the opportunity to make long lasting memories. At the end of our meeting, the club chose to donate $600.00 to help the RW students; and it is our hope that all RW and Ikata students will be our guests when the Ikata students travel to Minnesota this summer.

Come on out and support our ambassadors as they prepare for their journey to Ikata, Japan in July. Stop by Family Fare in Red Wing during our upcoming grocery bagging fundraisers and help support the increased travel expenses (like flights) and other costs for this incredible cultural exchange opportunity. Every donation makes a difference for each student.

Thank you for supporting the Red Wing Sister Cities ambassadors and helping make this experience possible!

Last year's (2025) welcome dinner brough such a special evening of connection, laughter, and new friendships.

We loved gathering with our Ikata students and chaperones as they arrived in Red Wing, sharing a delicious taco buffet from and enjoying a beautiful hands on flower pressing activity donated by Candace .

Moments like these remind us why Sister Cities matters so much to our community. Our commission and host families truly cherish the opportunity to welcome, connect, and build lasting friendships with our friends from Ikata.

Here's to continuing to grow these meaningful connections across the world - we can't wait to do it all again in 2026.

The students and their families attended the March 25, 2026 meeting to showcase their pieces to the commission, spoke about what inspired their piece, what the piece symbolized and then received their certificate and prize.

All three pieces have been submitted to the Sister Cities International YAAS competition.

The commission would like to thank and recognize RWHS Art Teacher, Kristin Bray, local artist and teacher Matt Quinn, local artist Dawn Zero Erickson, and our committee members Sheena Whitlock, Renee Kreye, Dani DeWitt, and Ingrid Hokanson for all your work on promoting the competition.
