Goodhue County Horticultural Society

Goodhue County Horticultural Society Our group enjoys learning to be better gardeners and also helping to beautify our community. We normally meet the third Monday of every month at 7:00 pm.

Our mission is to encourage and improve the science and practice of northern horticulture through developing the public's enjoyment and understanding of plants. We usually meet at the First Presbyterian Church, Red Wing in February thru May. We have garden tours in June, July and August. We then meet again at the church in September through November.

At 7 pm on Monday, April 20, Wendy Johnson will talk about the process to restore prairie and habitat on her Hay Creek Hills Farm. Wendy is a writer, filmmaker, and land steward. Hay Creek Hills Farm is a 100-acre parcel in Hay Creek Township. The land had been in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) since the 1980s. Most of the property was planted in brome and Kentucky bluegrass. While these prevented erosion they crowded out beneficial species and allowed invasive species to begin to take hold. In Spring 2023, Wendy begin implementing a designated Permanent Pollinator Habitat reconstruction on 17 acres of the CRP land. One of the first steps was dealing with aggressive stands of sumac, aspens, and black locust, along with Queen Anne’s lace and wild parsnip. Then in the spring of 2024 she planted planted native prairie seeds.
If you’d like to view more of the process before the program, Wendy’s Instagram site is: Instagram@wendyjohnsonprairiefilm
Sponsored by the Goodhue County Horticultural Society (GCHS). The meeting is free and open to the public. Please enter through the side doors by the car port on West Avenue.
