☔️ Flash floods at the border between Nepal and China struck Aug. 26, claiming more than 1,300 lives.

In Nepal, Salvation Army contacts have begun visiting affected communities to carry out initial assessments, but access remains difficult. Roads and other transport routes have been washed away, leaving severely affected areas largely cut off. ❤️‍🩹

Despite these challenges, one Salvation Army contact was able to reach Dhunche and Syafrubesi by chartered helicopter, gathering information on local needs and distributing a limited quantity of essential supplies, including rice, salt, blankets and clothing.

The Salvation Army in Nepal is now preparing for a wider distribution of relief supplies once rapid response funding becomes available.

✏️✨After school, Merary Hernandez, 17, volunteers to help grade assignments.

But she doesn't grade math homework or history papers. She gives encouraging feedback to incarcerated individuals enrolled in The Salvation Army’s Bible correspondence course. 🙏

In the first six months of this year, 380 people completed the 12-lesson course in the West, which is available in English and Spanish.

❤️“Even small acts of service can have a bigger purpose and impact in ways we might not always see,” Hernandez said, adding the work has encouraged her to be more intentional about her relationship with God. “In a way, it’s not just about helping them grow, but about helping me grow, too.”

🏆 Four advisory organizations in The Salvation Army Western Territory received a National Certificate of Excellence this year: the Torrance (California) Advisory Board, Gillette (Wyoming) Advisory Board, Butte (Montana) Advisory Board and King County (Washington) Advisory Board.

“This nationally recognized award is a huge deal, and we want to recognize our fantastic board on their commitment and accomplishments,” Torrance Corps Officer Captain Maryellen Walters said.

☝️These boards were recognized for meeting measurable standards established by the National Advisory Board for local organizations. These standards evaluate financial tracking, governance structures, member attendance metrics, hands-on volunteerism and active onboarding practices for new members.

❤️‍🩹When wildfires and flooding in Ruidoso, New Mexico, forced residents to evacuate in 2024, The Salvation Army stepped up.

But in Ruidoso, the organization doesn't have its own building. Instead, volunteers operated a Salvation Army Service Extension Unit from inside a local business.

💬“Service extension is such a unique part of The Salvation Army matrix of services,” said John Berglund, Western Territorial Emergency Disaster Services Director, following the Ruidoso disaster.

“These volunteers take on the special role of stewardship in providing resources right in their own community and provide care and support for their neighbors.” 🙏

🙏 In Spokane, Washington, 244 children who lost their homes in recent wildfires went on a back-to-school shopping spree thanks to a partnership between The Salvation Army, Old Navy, the Innovia Foundation, the American Red Cross and Wheatland Bank.

Old Navy offered a 50 percent discount to participating kids, who each received a $200 Old Navy gift card and a $100 Foot Locker gift card to purchase necessities for the school year. ❤️

Salvation Army Spokane Corps Officer and County Coordinator Captain Kelly Cain said the event was emotional, yet hopeful for a community rebuilding after disaster.

"One woman described the experience simply: 'This was therapeutic. It was exactly what I needed.' That captured the day perfectly," Cain said.

Today, iconic country singer Dolly Parton passed away at age 80.

❤️ We will remember Dolly for her kindness, generosity and joy. In 2023, she headlined the Red Kettle Kickoff on Thanksgiving Day and donated millions to support The Salvation Army's work in communities across the country.

She once said, "I just give from my heart. I never know what I’m going to do or why I’m gonna do it. I just see a need and if I can fill it, then I will.” 🙏

Please join us as we pray for Dolly's friends and family.

🙏 At several Salvation Army locations in Southern California, you'll find older adults talking, studying or playing with kids.

These volunteer Foster Grandparents act as mentors, tutors and friends for kids, all while experiencing a renewed sense of purpose and social connection for themselves. ❤️

“If I stayed home, I would be bored,” said Brenda Doby, a Foster Grandparent at The Salvation Army Long Beach Red Shield. “But coming here, it keeps me active, just doing what I love—working with kids.”
