Remembering the legendary Chuck Amato. 🏈

The former NC State Football coach, who spanned multiple decades of NC State athletics, died on Monday at the age of 80.

His 2002 Wolfpack team accomplished more than any other in school history, finishing with a program record 11 victories and beating heralded Notre Dame in the New Year's Day Gator Bowl. Amato's teams were 49-37 in his seven seasons, with additional postseason victories.

"He pushed us to limits that we didn't know we had," said former captain Clayton White. "He brought so much personality and persona to NC State, and we were all so proud of that."

From NCAA champion runner to record-setting coach, Laurie Henes ‘92 has built a cross country dynasty. 🏆🏃

“We’ve won four [championships] of the last five years,” says Rollie Geiger, senior associate director of track and field and cross country. “Who does that?!” NC State does, with a program led by Henes. “There’s several reasons you win national championships,” Geiger says. “You start with Laurie, but then there’s a whole list after that.”

Andrea Loera Valdez will soon graduate with the skills to teach all elementary subjects and the confidence to lead lessons thinking on her feet. She’ll return to her home in Edgecombe County ready to support her community’s students and families.

“Elementary education is a student’s first impression of what school can mean. The way that teachers go about starting students on their path of education — it’s really important,” said Loera Valdez. “Just having a good introduction can really influence how they see education as a whole.”

Do you prefer eastern or western barbecue sauce? 👀

What can usually divide a household in North Carolina has served as the secret to success for NC State College of Natural Resources’ Dr. Chris DePerno. As the creator of Slobberin’ Sauce — the latest co-branded NC State product — Dr. DePerno combined an eastern vinegar tang with a western tomatoey-based finish.

“It’s a really great sauce to unite family and friends around the kitchen table,” he said.

Extreme late-summer heat waves are threatening to reshape the college football experience. 🔥🏈

Each weekend, hundreds of thousands of fans converge on campuses across the country, firing up grills in parking lots, gathering with friends and family and streaming into stadiums to cheer on their teams. But, rising temperatures and humidity are already prompting safety delays and, in some cases, sending fans to the hospital.

"Heat will need to play a bigger role in scheduling, stadium design and game-day operations. Players face additional strain from exertion and protective equipment, making acclimatization, practice adjustments, cooling breaks and medical support essential," said Jonathan Casper, an NC State College of Natural Resources professor.

A new truck called the MooMobile is taking NC State Howling Cow Ice Cream and dairy education on the move. 🛞💨

The 2018 Ford has been hitting the road — visiting campus events, serving ice cream and answering countless questions about dairy farm operations.

"I believe that our mission of teaching, research and extension will be strengthened by being able to get off the farm and around campus to promote dairy farming and animal agriculture," said Carl Hollifield, director of Dairy Enterprise Systems and associate director of the Southeast Dairy Foods Research Center.

The Martin family is the 2026 NC State Family of the Year! Abigail Martin, a Park Scholar and senior in the NC State Poole College of Management, submitted the award-winning nomination. Her family traveled from Massachusetts for Parents and Families Weekend and was honored on the field at today's game.

Abby said that her family didn’t just support her — they gave her the courage and space to build her own Wolfpack community. And despite having no prior connection to NC State, Abby says her parents haven't missed a Wolfpack game on TV since she started attending in fall 2023.

The Family of the Year contest has become an annual tradition during Parents and Families Weekend. Hosted by NC State Parents and Families Services, Family of the Year invites NC State students to honor and express gratitude for their parents and family members’ unwavering commitment and exceptional encouragement throughout their educational journey.
