RAINBOW CITY, AL — History is being written on the pitch this month as two local youth soccer teams pack their bags for the ultimate national stage. Headquartered out of the newly minted Sportsplex at Rainbow City, the Alabama Rush U13 Black and U15 Black boys' teams have officially qualified for the prestigious US Youth Soccer National Championships in Utah.
The tournament, which runs from July 16–23, 2026, will bring the country's most elite youth talent to Salt Lake City and Provo. For a program anchored right here in Etowah County, sending two separate age groups to compete for a national title is nothing short of historic.
A Regional Powerhouse with Small-Town Roots
While Alabama Rush calls the top-tier fields of Rainbow City home, the magic of these two rosters lies in their true grassroots, community-driven nature. Far from a big-city academy, this squad is powered entirely by homegrown athletes and outstanding coaches from across the local landscape, drawing standout players and coaches from:
Southside, Rainbow Middle, Gadsden City Schools, Westbrook Christian, Oneonta Schools, Hokes Bluff, Glencoe, and Albertville
“This unique blend of local rivalries turning into teammates has created a fierce, tight-knit chemistry that has left larger metropolitan clubs trailing in their wake all season long. The Rainbow City Sportsplex built by the Etowah County Sports authority and operated by the City of Rainbow City has given these players a top facility to train and develop their amazing talent to an even higher level” stated Club Technical Director Warren Van Der Westhuizen . "Coming from top facilities Georgia and Texas, the native South African stated, “our facilities are second to none. RBC Recreation Director Philip Michael Hollingsworth, and Sportplex Facilities Director Stacy Jones have gone above and beyond to keep this facility in top condition. The support of Mayor Joe Taylor, Authority Chairman Randy Vice, and the entire Rainbow City Council continues to keep this facility and program top notch."
The Road to Utah: What Lies Ahead
Both the U13 and U15 divisions face a rigorous schedule at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City and the Epic Sports Park in Provo. Competing against the nation's premier clubs, the boys will have to rely on the grit and technical development that got them here.
The tournament structure spans a grueling week of high-stakes soccer:
July 16 – 18: Three consecutive days of intense Group Play matches.
July 19: A much-needed rest and recovery day.
July 20 – 23: Single-elimination Knockout Rounds, culminating in the National Final matches on Thursday, July 23.
Spreading the "Rush Nation" Spirit
For the parents, coaches, and local fans making the journey out west,or waking up early to stream the matches from Alabama, this run represents the culmination of years of hard work, late-night practices, and a player-centered philosophy that prioritizes long-term development.
Whether the U13 and U15 Black teams bring home the gold or not, they have already put Northeast Alabama soccer firmly on the national map. As the squads head out to the mountains of Utah, the entire community of Rainbow City, Gadsden, Southside, Oneonta, Glencoe, Hokes Bluff and Albertville stands united behind them.
