Friday Freight House Facts: Here is a close up of the interior stonework between the doors.
There was a story published by the Quakertown Free Pree Press on Novemver 14, 1902 soon after the Freight House was completed.
The Freight House was erected during the summer of 1902 and had already been operating for several months by November. It gives the building as 128 × 30 feet, with 68-foot extensions at each end. It specifically says the large doors on both sides allowed teams—horse-drawn wagons—to load and unload while freight handlers transferred goods to and from railroad cars. The freight office was at the north end, and a wagon scale was being installed nearby.

Did you know the Quakertown Freight House has 12 original freight doors—six on each side of the building?

More than a century ago, freight arrived by train and was moved through these doors before being loaded onto horse-drawn carts for delivery. As transportation changed, trucks eventually took their place.

After decades of sitting closed, we’ve been able to open three of the 12 doors so far! Each one gives us another glimpse into how this incredible building once operated.

🚪 Nine more doors—and a lot more history—waiting to be opened.

Follow along as we continue bringing the 1902 Quakertown Freight House back to life!

Our building never stops revealing itself to us. Check out this trap door. While the wood is disintegrating the metal will be saved and used somewhere in the building.

We’ve welcomed many new followers lately, and we’re so glad you’re here!

The Rail Yard Society is a nonprofit dedicated to saving Quakertown’s historic buildings and bringing them back to life. Our first project is the 1902 Quakertown Freight House, which sat abandoned for more than 30 years.

🏗️ Phase One is complete, with $776,000 invested to stabilize and save the building.

🎉 We also recently celebrated a $1 million Main Street Matters Grant to help move the restoration forward!

There’s still work to do—and approximately $1 million more to raise to complete our full vision.

❤️ Follow our journey, share our story, and help us preserve Quakertown’s history.

🚂 One Building. One Community. One Legacy.
