πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Did You Know a 100-Foot Flagpole Once Stood in the Middle of Downtown Pryor! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

If you had visited downtown Pryor during World War I, you would have seen a towering 100-foot flagpole standing proudly in the center of the street.

In the spring of 1917, as Mayes County servicemembers prepared to deploy to the Great War, Rev. R.M. Phillips of First Christian Church led a community effort to erect the flagpole as a symbol of patriotism and support. Mrs. Emma Oberschlake hand-sewed the American flag that was dedicated on Memorial Day 1917.

The entire community gathered for the ceremony, where Civil War veterans John C. Hogan (representing the Gray) and Jack Thompson (representing the Blue) raised the flag together in a powerful display of unity. A 1,000-watt light illuminated the top of the pole and was reportedly visible all the way to Ketchum!

As automobiles became more common, the landmark was removed from the roadway in 1938 for traffic safety and relocated to the courthouse grounds, where it was re-dedicated in 1939. The historic flagpole remained there until it was removed during construction of the new courthouse in 2000.
