Cherokee Nation was among eight sites in the country to be awarded the federal STREETS grant, through the new Safety Through Recovery, Engagement, and Evidence-based Treatment and Support (STREETS) program from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The funds mark a significant investment in improving health and wellness for Cherokee Nation citizens most at risk for mental health challenges, substance use disorders and housing insecurities.

Administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), STREETS will provide $96 million total over four years to help communities build coordinated systems of care for people who are homeless and have serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders, according to HHS.

Thank you PiP for reminding all of us that not all homeless refuse to work or are addicts.

Mayes County Grace Foundation regularly spends time in prayer over the currently unknown person/persons that will open a temporary shelter where all un-housed can reside with resources, help, and oversight to be successful. Mayes County is so desperately in need of someone to hear and obey God's voice in this matter.

We can't all be His eyes, hands and feet. He calls us to be the part of His body that He wants us to serve, as just the eyes, just the hands, or just the feet according to His purpose. When we do that His body can serve together to move in Pryor and Mayes County to serve our, yes OUR homeless population.

Christ believers/followers are called to help the poor, that includes the homeless. If all you can do is pray, then pray, that should be the most important thing we do, before all else. Let's be a community that recognizes a need and acts on God's calling.

Did you know according to city ordinance the only time people can't sleep on benches in Pryor Whitaker Park is between Midnight and 6am?

Sleeping on a bench during the day and until midnight is allowed. Let them sleep.
