"Sunrise Explosion"

This sunrise at Split Rock Lighthouse was nothing short of spectacular.
With the clouds on the horizon and the fog rolling across the water, It didn't look like the sun would light up the sky. It wasn't until the sun was entirely above the horizon that it poked through the clouds and the entire sky exploded into hues of oranges and yellows.

Made the 3-hour drive overnight just to catch the sunrise, and it didn't disappoint 👌🏻

Highway 61 & Silver Creek Tunnel

Located five miles north of Two Harbors, the Silver Creek Tunnel was completed in 1994, replacing an older section of Highway 61 that once hugged the cliffside. Built in 1923–1924, the original road offered breathtaking views of Lake Superior and served travelers for over 70 years.

Despite its scenic beauty, the old road posed serious challenges. The harsh North Shore climate weakened the cliff, increasing the risk of falling boulders. The road’s foundation grew unstable, and its steep, narrow, and winding design made it difficult to maintain. Only a stone barrier stood between vehicles and the drop to Lake Superior below.

Construction of the Silver Creek Tunnel began in 1991, requiring the removal of 500,000 cubic feet of rock. The new route was built wider and straighter, greatly improving safety and accessibility—especially for drivers unfamiliar with the area.

Today, you can still enjoy the stunning lake views by walking or biking the original route along the Gitchi-Gami State Trail.
