In addition to their sponsorships, the individuals and businesses that support the Calvert County Watermen's Festival and Boat Docking Competition like to spoil our crowd. From gift certificates, to t-shirts, to key chains, crab seasoning, and more--it goes home with the crowd. We are thankful for the support and grateful to be able to connect other local businesses with the community. Most of all we are proud. Proud to be part of such a community centered event.

Good luck with your event today Taylor's Island Fire Department!! We hope the beautiful weather means a big crowd!!

READY, SET, DOCK! TODAY IS THE DAY! Come down to Taylors Island for an action-packed Boat Docking Competition. It's all about skill, speed, teamwork, nerves and a boatload of fun! But this isn’t just about the competition - it’s about supporting our local fire company and the volunteers who are there for our community when we need them most. Bring your family, bring your friends, bring your Eastern Shore pride, and come cheer on the best workboat captains on the Chesapeake!

Great food and drinks will be available on sale, including beer and crushes. Boat docking T-shirts, and other fire company merch, will also be on sale. There will be a raffle of an awesome sterling silver jewelry set, 50/50 and a quick auction of really amazing items during the intermission.

The Taylors Island Boat Docking Challenge takes place at the Slaughter Creek Marina (638 Taylors Island Rd., Taylors Island, Maryland). Gates open at 11AM. Admission is just $5 and all proceeds benefit the Taylors Island Volunteer Fire Company. Come on down to the island, you'll be glad you came!

We have quite a few new sponsors this year and the majority (not all) of them are young people who started businesses and are looking to make a place for themselves. It is such a good feeling to know these sons and daughters, neighbors, friends, and family decided to stay and are making a go of it right here in our community. If you will, think of this sponsor list next time you need a service. Let's keep it local.
If we missed you, reach out to Rachel Dean and give her hell. 😉

"Bar cleaning" is the Bay term watermen use when they are recovering oysters or shell from sediment. As we continue to work in the Patuxent River bar cleaning, the meaning has become quite literal. Piles of debris are being brought back to the dumpster. Just how many shoes do you guys loose overboard? And are they flotsam or jetsam? 😂

Calvert County Watermen are wrapping up a second week of oyster shell recovery in the Patuxent River. We're making strong progress toward our goal of reclaiming shell on five key oyster bars. The support from you, our working waterfront community, is overwhelming. Thank you.

Why is sediment a problem?
Even though oysters can handle some mud and silt, too much sediment can bury them and
limit their growth (Nelson 1960). Oysters can also be affected when material from their own feeding builds up around them and covers nearby shell (see black in photos).

Clean shell provides a hard
surface where young oysters can attach and grow during the summer spawning season. Our efforts will hopefully support healthy oyster populations on public fishing grounds in the Patuxent River for years to come.

Thank you to everyone who makes a daily effort to reduce the silt and nutrients that go into our waterways. Plant a shrub. Reduce the amount of fertilizer you use on the lawn.
We can all do our part.
