"Bar cleaning" is the Bay term watermen use when they are recovering oysters or shell from sediment. As we continue to work in the Patuxent River bar cleaning, the meaning has become quite literal. Piles of debris are being brought back to the dumpster. Just how many shoes do you guys loose overboard? And are they flotsam or jetsam? 😂

Calvert County Watermen are wrapping up a second week of oyster shell recovery in the Patuxent River. We're making strong progress toward our goal of reclaiming shell on five key oyster bars. The support from you, our working waterfront community, is overwhelming. Thank you.

Why is sediment a problem?
Even though oysters can handle some mud and silt, too much sediment can bury them and
limit their growth (Nelson 1960). Oysters can also be affected when material from their own feeding builds up around them and covers nearby shell (see black in photos).

Clean shell provides a hard
surface where young oysters can attach and grow during the summer spawning season. Our efforts will hopefully support healthy oyster populations on public fishing grounds in the Patuxent River for years to come.

Thank you to everyone who makes a daily effort to reduce the silt and nutrients that go into our waterways. Plant a shrub. Reduce the amount of fertilizer you use on the lawn.
We can all do our part.

Calvert County Watermen's Association will spend one more day working to clear sediment and pull shell out of the mud on Sandy Point Bar (Lower Pax). We are hoping to clean the shell before the arrival of baby oysters in the coming months. It will give them somewhere to colonize. There will be fewer boats working today. (Quite a few of the guys are trying to participate between setting crab pots.) We just want to make sure our community knows whats going on. No oysters are being harvested. Thank you to everyone who shares our vision. We are proud and fortunate to be part of a true waterfront community. ❤️ 🦪

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the Calvert County Watermen's Association Crab Pot and Buoy Christmas Tree a success. We are so grateful to be able to give back to a community that continues to support our seafood industry. If you didn't come out in these frigid temps to pick up your buoy we have them safe (and warm). Reach out and we will get it to you!
Thank you Liquid Landscapes for donating the lift and putting in the time.
