People on the Go Southern Maryland

People on the Go Southern Maryland People on the Go Southern Maryland is a tricounty local chapter of the statewide self advocacy group, People on the Go Maryland.

These self advocates are fighting for change throughout SOMD as well as at a state level, for all with disabilities. These self-advocates believe all people, including those with disabilities should be active participants in their own communities and live self fulfilling lives. People On The Go helps these individuals use their voices to be heard and be recognized and helps eliminate discriminatio

n against those with disabilities. Our group is supported by The Arc Southern Maryland. The mission of The Arc Southern Maryland is to create opportunities for independence and personal success for people with different abilities in inclusive communities. Our meetings are held the first Monday of every month from 4:30pm-6:00pm. We are currently meeting virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Send us a message if you interested in attending to see what our group is all about!

Urgent: Act Now to Restore DDA Funding!

The proposed FY26 budget includes cuts totaling $457 million to developmental disability services, amounting to a 22% reduction in critical support. These cuts will severely impact people with disabilities, families, and community providers across Maryland.

Here’s what’s at stake ⬇️

Residential Support Cuts: Funding for many homes requiring dedicated 1:1 staffing will be reduced, threatening the quality of care for those who need it most.

County-Specific Funding Reductions: Higher rates in Montgomery, Prince George’s, Calvert, Charles, and Frederick Counties will be eliminated, reducing provider capacity and significantly impacting services in these areas.

Suspension of the LISS Program: All funding for the Low Intensity Support Services (LISS) Program will be cut, removing essential small grants that help families who do not receive other DDA services.

These proposed budget cuts will have devastating effects on the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families, who rely on these services for daily support and independence.

Act Now ⬇️

1. Contact Your Legislators in Annapolis: Urge them to oppose these cuts and restore the funding. Your voice matters!

2. Share Your Personal Story: This is vital to our advocacy! Explain how these services impact you or your loved ones. Personal stories are powerful and do influence decision-makers.

3. Spread the Word: Share this alert with your network to amplify our collective voice.

How to Contact Your Legislators ⬇️

1. Find your legislators by searching your home address online. https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Members/District

2. Write to your State Senator and Delegates (not your Congressional representatives).

3. Include your personal experiences to highlight the importance of these services.

Together, we can make a difference and protect the rights and services that are vital to our community. Time is of the essence—act now to ensure our voices are heard.
