In 2024, there were 21,964 crashes involving a 65+ year old driver, resulting in 308 fatalities and 1,044 suspected serious injuries. While growing older does not necessarily constitute a safety risk, when to stop driving is a decision that should be made by the older driver and the older driver's family. Since driving is such a critical form of transportation for the older driver, it is also a very difficult decision to make.

Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we urge everyone to stay especially vigilant when driving or riding near motorcycles. Motorcyclists and their passengers are more exposed and vulnerable than those in cars, making it critical for all road users to follow traffic laws and remain aware of their surroundings to help keep everyone safe.

Big trucks can be intimidating, looming above neighboring cars and filling their rearview mirrors. About 75% of fatal car-truck accidents are caused by the driver of the car. To drive safely near big rigs, you should not tailgate or become preoccupied with them; instead, taking some careful precautions will go a long way toward ensuring your own safety.

Ride to Work Day celebrates the joys of motorcycle riding. Whether you ride as part of your daily commute, for weekend fun, or as part of a community of riders, safety comes first. The unique freedom of the road that comes with motorcycles also comes with responsibilities — for your safety and for that of others. Drivers should remember to be on the lookout for motorcycles, allow extra following distance when behind a motorcycle, and be sure to signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. If we all respect one another on the roadway it will be a safe and enjoyable summer for everyone.

Beginning June 6, Pennsylvania’s Paul Miller’s Law prohibits the use of handheld devices while driving — even while stopped in traffic or at a red light. The penalty is a summary offense with a $50 fine, plus court costs and other fees. If a driver is convicted of homicide by vehicle and driving while distracted, they may be sentenced up to an additional five years in prison.

A few simple habits can go a long way, helping you stay safe while walking. Always cross at crosswalks and stick to sidewalks rather than walking along the road. Make yourself visible by wearing reflective clothing especially at dawn, dusk or after dark. Stay alert and never walk while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

Respect a motorcycle as a full-size vehicle with the same rights and privileges as any vehicle on the roadway. Allow a motorcyclist a full lane width as the motorcyclist needs the room to maneuver safely in all types of road conditions. Absolutely DO NOT share the lane with a motorcyclist.
