BIKE WEEK IN REVIEW -- May 16 - Saturday Morning Gravel Grinders, Mayors' Ride, Bike Safety & Helmet Fitting Event, Open Roads Grand Opening

Kevin Oostema organized the weekly Saturday Morning Gravel Grinders ride as a featured Bike Week event. They rode on the Dirty Donut course, with "all levels welcome."

Saturday's annual Mayors' Ride -- this year organized by the City of Kalamazoo -- brought together Kalamazoo and Portage officials on a casual family-friendly bike ride that featured examples of a number of different bicycling facilities in a number of neighborhoods around the Kalamazoo Farmers Market. Route planner Wilson Xu pointed out features of a variety of bicycling related elements at stops along the way, making for a very interesting 6-7 mile tour.

The Bike Safety & Helmet Fitting Event hosted at Trestlewood Pediatrics and organized by Safe Kids Kalamazoo County focused on properly fitting helmets for upcoming spring and summer activities! The event helps raise awareness that a properly fitted helmet can dramatically reduce the risk of severe brain injuries, and encourage their use while kick scooter riding, as well as inline and roller-skating.

The Open Roads Grand Opening featured the new home of the Open Roads Bike Program in the Edison Neighborhood. The event offered bike repair, plus games and food. Clients, staff, leadership and supporters all got a chance to meet and greet, and to see the new workshop that Open Roads conducts programs from, and to take a group ride around the neighborhood.

During this retrospective, we are cross posting or linking to a number of Facebook usernames to increase awareness of all the great bicycling related groups who made Kalamazoo Bike Week possible this year! Thank you to all the inspirational Kalamazoo Bike Week Event Organizers & Event Supporters.

BIKE WEEK IN REVIEW -- May 15 - Friday Morning Women's Ride w/ KBC, Open Shop at Open Roads and It's A Pub Ride! --

The Friday Morning Women's Ride with KBC offered two friendly no-drop groups starting/finishing at Texas Drive Park: one at 25-30 miles at 15-16 mph, the other 25-30 miles at 13-14 mph. You didn't have to be a Kalamazoo Bike Club member to join in, but KBC membership includes a newsletter, Ride with GPS, KBC club insurance and many other benefits. This is a regular weekly ride during the season. Learn more about this and the other KBC rides at: https://www.kalamazoobicycleclub.org/rides/club-rides/

Friday's Open Roads Bike Program Open Shop event encouraged everyone to fix their bikes with help from the Open Roads team. This is a regular program during much of the year, for those who want to learn how to properly maintain and repair their bikes, in a well-supplied shop filled with parts and friendly, experienced mechanics who are more than glad to work with youth and adults alike. Learn more about their Friday Open Shop here: https://www.openroadsbike.org/adult-programs--open-shop.html

It's a Pub Ride! helped to say "TGIF" on Pedal Bicycles regular social ride taking place every other Friday night during the season (which kicked off during Bike Week)! The ride started at their Portage ("South") shop, with a fun stop at Latitude 42. Riders took an easy two mile ride on the Portage Bikeway leading more or less from the shop, stopped for a snack and rode back to the shop. E-bikes were welcome. Pedal reminded folks that "It'll get dark! Lights are required!" Learn more about all the Pedal rides here: https://www.pedalbicycle.com/articles/events.-sweet-sweet-events-pg213.htm

BIKE WEEK IN REVIEW -- May 14 - Open Shop at Open Roads and Thursday Pedal Road Ride - with Taco Truck! -- This Open Roads Bike Program Open Shop event encouraged adults as well as youth to fix their bikes with help from the Open Roads team. This is a regular program during much of the year, for those who want to learn how to properly maintain and repair their bikes. Learn more about their Thursday night Open Shop here: https://www.openroadsbike.org/adult-programs--open-shop.html

The Thursday Pedal Road Ride - with Taco Truck! coupled Pedal Bicycle's regular Thursday night road ride that starts at their downtown Kalamazoo shop, with a fun taco truck visit. The taco truck usually swings by on the 3rd Thursday of every month during the regular riding season, so the great vibe continues long after Bike Week is over. BIKE WEEK IN REVIEW -- May 13 - Bikes 4 All, Local Bicycling Developments: 2026 & Beyond, Wednesday Night Ride w/ KBC and Bike Rodeo -- The Bikes 4 All event offered a tour of the bike maintenance and repair facilities at WMU's Office For Sustainability, with a relaxed bike ride. Learn more about their Bicycle Resource Hub here: https://wmich.edu/sustainability/office/projects-programs/bike-stable

The Local Bicycling Developments: 2026 & Beyond panel covered updates on the City of Portage's plans for their Austin Lake Trail and Bikeway expansion along Portage Road, extension of the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail eastward past Galesburg, safety results and development of 2-way streets on W Michigan and Kalamazoo Avenues, and a review of infrastructure countermeasures aimed at improving safety at intersections (which locations now account for up to 75% of all serious bicycle-motor vehicle crashes in the area).

The Bike Rodeo was held on a huge course of educational stations laid out in the parking lot of the Kalamazoo Farmers Market. Many organizations came together to teach biking skills, provide helmets, make sure bikes were adjusted and working properly.

Wednesday Night Ride w/ KBC took off from the 10th Street Kal-Haven Trailhead parking lot, as it does every week in the warmer riding season. We are using a file photo for now unless some kind rider can send us an event photo. Learn more about KBC's Wednesday Night Ride at https://www.kalamazoobicycleclub.org/rides/club-rides/

BIKE WEEK IN REVIEW -- May 12 - Kal-Haven Trail Ride, Tuesday Night Women's Ride With KBC and the Pedal Q***r Ride - Bike Week Edition! -- The Kal-Haven Trail Ride took off with Terry Hutchins organizing this ride for Bike Week. Usually the ride turns around at Gobles (13.2 miles); but people may turn around earlier. Informal rides like this happen all the time around the area. Sometimes, like Alt Biking Kalamazoo or Chili Cats or ModeShift Kalamazoo the groups have a page, often organized around a theme. Check them out!

The Tuesday Night Women's Ride with KBC got rained out this year, but the photos show what the ride often is like. This regular Tuesday night ride is sponsored by the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club - check the KBC calendar for details at https://www.kalamazoobicycleclub.org/rides/club-rides/

Pedal Bicycle's Pedal Q***r Ride - Bike Week Edition! took place as planned on Tuesday evening. The ride is expected to be a regular one - learn more at https://www.pedalbicycle.com/articles/events.-sweet-sweet-events-pg213.htm

BIKE WEEK IN REVIEW -- May 11 - Monday Morning Cruisers - Monday Night Ride w/ KBC - Pedal Mountain Bike Monday Ride -

The Monday Morning Cruisers followed the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail on a recreational ride for some 10 to 15 miles, with a coffee and bakery stop afterward.

The Monday Morning Cruisers take to the trails every week during the warmer weather riding season, from different starting locations. It's an easy going recreational ride with comfortable attire. Learn more about their rides at https://www.kalcounty.gov/406/Trail-Events-Programs.

The Monday Night Ride w/ KBC during Bike Week rode with a little over 50 riders on Monday with some seven routes/paces. This regular Monday night ride is sponsored by the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club - check the KBC calendar for details at https://www.kalamazoobicycleclub.org/rides/club-rides/

Pedal Bicycle's Mountain Bike Monday Ride during Bike Week featured a cookout. It attracted many riders who had heard about Kalamazoo Area Bike Week, and to the Maple Hill Trail at Markin Glen from their usual Monday ride during the season (which normally rides at the Warnaar Trail in Three Rivers.

We cross post to some of these groups to increase awareness of all the great bicycling related groups who made Kalamazoo Bike Week possible this year! Thank you to all the inspirational Kalamazoo Bike Week Event Organizers & Event Supporters.
