Bound Together

Bound Together Free Tutoring, Mentoring and Healthy Dinners for Pontiac, MI Elementary and Middle School Students

Bound Together, a non-profit tutoring and nutrition program, is celebrating 28 years of creating caring community with children and families who reside in Pontiac, MI. We provide a welcoming environment for students grades 1-8 as we work together on math, phonics and reading comprehension, and all elements of homework support. Committed one-on-one mentoring concentrating on remedial math, phonics

and reading comprehension skills. After an hour of working, we gather with our children to share a hot, nutritionally balanced meal and a chance to just be together.

Bound Together's program for 25-26 went out with a flourish at our End of the Year Party! Our families, volunteers, and guests from Pontiac Promise Zone and PEACE Academy plus Consumers Energy gathered around art and Mother's Day flowers, cashing out the Bank of Bound Together, celebrating LEXIA reading awards with Dr. Ashelin Currie from Oakland Schools, and having one last visit around pizza and ice cream sammies before summer (with planning for 2026-27 well underway!) Thank you to everyone who makes the learning, the smiles and the community possible.📚

Bound Together has been thrilled to be a part of the Pontiac Arts Crawl - we took the worry dolls out for a stroll last Friday and connected with families and fabulous makers of all ages, as no one is too young (or too old) to have a friend to whisper their anxieties to. Sincere thanks to Dr. Krystal and her amazing team at Herbal Touch for hosting us, and to the kids and grown-ups that embraced the project, shared their stories and built a little bit of community on Saginaw Street.❤

FunDay Monday was a brisk stroll over to Pontiac Creative Arts Center, where our young art appreciators took in the Oakland Community College art installation. Ms. Melinda gave a terrific guided tour of the various media, with each student choosing their favorite work and discussing the "why?" around that - there were ideas, opinions, and agreement that art makes us see and feel in some pretty awesome ways. (Thank you, Ms. Melinda!❤)

So much teamwork/dreamwork! Sheriff PAL was out with us last week to provide those all-important opportunities to play together, learn about sharing, sportsmanship, and that being a winner is about more than winning. Look for more info soon about the Summer Discovery Camp that Bound Together and Sheriff PAL will sponsor in Pontiac with the help of the United Way and the Ballmer Group - such a privilege to work, together, to be the change that our kids and families need right now❤.

FunDay Monday had Dr. Kyeorda Kemp, faculty at William Beaumont School of Medicine, teaching blood typing and the science behind it. Our kids were able to explain why it's so important to know our blood type, who can be a universal donor, and the measures we need to take to be safe when we engage in these kinds of experiments. (Full disclosure: no kiddos were poked in order to create this Facebook post - synthetic blood for us!❤) Thank you, Dr. Kemp!

We were SO excited to participate in the African American Read-In at OSTC on 02.26 - and to have five of our students receive their LEXIA reading certificates from Dr. Ashelin Currie during the event! A wonderful dinner, tours of the school and a great program with the author Kwame Alexander rounded out our evening - and also had to include some pix of our collage experience with Ms. Melinda and Pontiac Creative Arts Center on FunDay Monday this week!❤

February's gone - but we've been working to keep up with tutoring, FunDay Mondays (thanks, Sheriff Pal, for getting us moving!🏀) and tomorrow is our field trip to the African American Read-In, where 5 students will receive certificates for work in phonics. We're working to apply that with reading every day - and that work on the board? Bank of Bound Together will come back next month, too, to give us a workout on the basic number facts than mean so much to moving ahead in math💵!
