The Blackfoot Valley came together to bring back trumpeter swans after 200 years. The swan reintroduction stopped in 2022, but the swans, and those stewarding them, are still flocking in the valley.

Nesting trumpeter swans!
How do you tell a male swan from a female swan? Look who is on the swan nest and who is in the water during nesting season!

Here are two iconic videos of a nesting trumpeter swan pair! This wetland is in Michigan along a busy road. It is late April.

You can see the large nest of cattails, reeds and other vegetation. It was made by the pair, working together. It is a mound that rises above the water (often nests are on muskrat or beaver mounds). The eggs are incubated for 32-36 days - so, just over a month.

Video 1: It is the female trumpeter swan on the nest incubating the eggs. The male swan is in the water, near the nest, helping with nest maintenance.

Video 2: Here you can see the female swan turning the eggs in the nest. She will occasionally get off the nest to feed, and cover the eggs with down and fluffy plant material to insulate eggs from hot and cold temperature changes while she is feeding.

Meanwhile, the male swan in the water continues to help with nest maintenance.

Thank you to Colleen Giddings for sharing these videos through Trumpeter Watch.

How large are young swans, cygnets, at 2 months of age? Take a look!

These videos were sent by Margaret Behme in her Trumpeter Watch report from Ontario in early August.

The trumpeter swan family is at the storm reservoir at Humber Bay Park at Etobicoke.

According to Margaret, the family has been at the storm reservoir for over a month. They often sit on an old beaver dam.

Thank you to Margaret Behme for sharing a moment in the life of young Ontario trumpeter swans!
