Young swans begin to fly!

It’s early October at this Michigan pond. A swan family has been here all summer and three trumpeter swan cygnets have survived. At this particular moment, their parents are not on the pond.

It seems the cygnets have decided it is time to try things out on their own!

There’s liftoff!

Thank you to Colleen Giddings for her Trumpeter Watch report including this video of this special time as cygnets learn to fly.

She reported: “When I arrived, I only observed 3 cygnets in the pond. Parents were nowhere to be seen. I scoured the pond with binoculars, and walked around, looking for them. The cygnets stayed together while swimming and feeding. At one point, the cygnets began to fly, skimming over the surface. As I drove away, the parents flew in!”

Fun fact and cool to know: Look for the gray and white coloring on the young swans’ feathers. They retain some gray coloring on their head, neck, and bodies through their first year. If you see a trumpeter swan with gray feathers, you’ll know it is less than a year old! Young swans grow white feathers their second summer.

It’s early August on a Wisconsin protected wetland. Five gray-feathered young trumpeter swans are nearly as large as their parents. In the next few weeks they will take their first flights. But first they need to prepare and get stronger. How? Watch in these three short videos a swan parent helping the young swans begin to get ready for flight.

Trumpeting new frontiers for water quality and Trumpeter Swans in Iowa

Iowa’s Trumpeter Swan population continues to soar to new heights following reintroduction efforts across the state. At the same time, over 100 wetlands have been constructed on private lands with the primary goal of improving water quality and capturing runoff. In this webinar, we will discuss how these unique created wetlands not only benefit water quality, but also support Trumpeter Swan recovery across an agricultural landscape.

About the speaker: Jayden Jech is a Graduate Research Assistant at Iowa State University working with Dr. Adam Janke studying Trumpeter Swans on constructed wetlands across Iowa. Jayden is a certified Associate Wildlife Biologist with experience spanning government, nonprofit, and academic sectors. He was an inaugural recipient of the John E. Cornely Travel Scholarship and attended the 27th Trumpeter Swan Society Conference in July, presenting his research on this topic.
