Choice in Aging is a community based nonprofit, born in 1949, whose mission is to create opportunities where people can learn, grow, and age independently with dignity and community. Choice in Aging provides Adult Day Health Care services in a congregate setting - we have programs in Antioch and Pleasant Hill. These programs are staffed with nurses, social workers, a dietitian, physical and occupa

tional therapists, activity coordinators and more! Programs include Russian, Farsi, mid-to-late stage Alzheimer's disease and related dementia and general programs. Choice in Aging also offers the Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP) in Contra Costa, Napa, and Solano Counties, which provides a nurse and social worker team who help people 65 and older on Medi-Cal who are at risk for institutionalization continue living at home. The Prevention and Early Access for Seniors (PEAS) program is a mental health case management program that strives to identify Older Adults 60+ in Solano County that are struggling to find and or maintain a positive quality of life. California Community Transitions at Choice in Aging helps people who are institutionalized get back out into community living. Finally, Choice in Aging partners with our neighbors at Choice in Learning Montessori to offer intergenerational activities to help bring the gap between the aging population and the youngest generation. Choice in Aging also provides education, support, and referrals to caregivers to help them keep their loved ones living at home. Growing Healthy Kids is a nonprofit supporting outdoor educational learning opportunities in elementary school settings. Prior to this role, Susannah served as the Executive Director for Empowered Aging, which advocates for older adults in long-term care facilities throughout Contra Costa, Solano, and Alameda counties. Through her nonprofit work, she has deep community ties to Contra Costa County and the broader Bay Area. She has also served as a Senior District Representative for the State Senate, Councilmember (elected in 2020) and, currently, Mayor (elected in 2024) for the City of Brentwood.

Susannah sees her public service and nonprofit work as opportunities to raise the voices of those who are not always heard and to drive policy that serves people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities. She is a member of the Brentwood Lions and has been a lifelong volunteer and advocate with a desire to serve and to make a difference.

California Collaborative for Long-Term Services and Supports (CCLTSS) is participating in a coordinated statewide effort to elevate LTSS during the gubernatorial transition and help ensure that the next Administration has a strong foundation for action. This effort is an opportunity to make sure the next Administration hears clearly from aging and disability communities about what is working, where Californians continue to face barriers, and where state leadership can make a meaningful difference.

: Meet Christine

Christine has been a childcare professional at Choice in Learning (CiL) since its inception in 2017 and has been working in a Montessori classroom for 27 years. After all these years, she remains exactly where she wants to be. As she enthusiastically says, “I cannot imagine myself anywhere else!”

Christine is admittedly biased toward the Montessori method of “following the child” and never giving more to the mind than to the hand. She believes that fostering independence and providing a “help me do it for myself” education are fundamental to a student’s growth and success, both in the classroom and in life. This approach allows students to learn with minimal intervention from their teachers while pursuing their individual interests. “In public schools, the students learn the same things at the same time,” Christine explains, “but at CiL, they learn at their own pace.”

The CiL preschool class is intentionally designed as a multi-year experience, with the first year focused on helping students become acclimated, comfortable, and confident in their new environment. “The second year is when they come out of their shells,” Christine explains. “They know what they’re doing, they’re picking up more, and they’re becoming leaders and wanting to help others.” By the second year, the classroom teachers already know each child well and can focus on preparing them for kindergarten. Christine considers this transition one of the most rewarding parts of the program. “When they leave CiL after completing the two-year program for kindergarten, we hear nothing but positive feedback from parents about what a great transition it was.”

Christine notes that the growing availability of Transitional Kindergarten (TK) can interrupt this important developmental process. Just as students are beginning to emerge as leaders and take on greater responsibility, they are often pulled out of the program. For the children, this means missing valuable opportunities to build independence, become comfortable away from their parents, and develop the social skills needed to collaborate, communicate, and thrive in a classroom setting.

Ultimately, what keeps Christine passionate about her work is seeing children discover just how much they are capable of doing on their own. “The most rewarding part of my job is helping these little ones to be their best selves, setting them free, and knowing they are going to thrive!” That enthusiasm is just as evident to those who work alongside her. Site Director Gina says, “If I had to describe Christine in one word, I would have to say ‘fun.’ I’ve watched her get her hair done and receive multiple shots all at the same time while sitting on the floor in child care. She makes it her mission to know all the latest information that would interest a preschool population, and let’s not forget her dance moves that entertain children and staff alike!”

: Meet Vince & Kelsey

For parents, one of the hardest decisions is entrusting their children to someone else. When it was time to find a preschool for their only daughter, Vince and Kelsey took their time and did their research. They knew they wanted a Montessori program, and after touring several schools, they found Choice in Learning (CiL). They were immediately drawn to the happiness of the students and teachers, as well as the program’s strong commitment to safety. They enrolled their daughter when she was just 2½ years old.

“One of the big draws when we were learning about the school was the intergenerational activities and the integration of both ends of the spectrum of life,” says Vince. “Our daughter really enjoys visiting the participants at Choice in Aging and joining them for artwork, yoga, and music.”

Vince and Kelsey knew that the years between three and four would be an important period of development for their daughter. Rather than pursuing the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) route, they wanted her to remain in an environment where she felt safe and secure while continuing to develop her independence and love of learning. “The teaching staff at CiL and their investment in their students’ development played a major role in our decision to extend our child's time there. We are forever grateful for the support and guidance they give day in and day out.”

Seeing how well their daughter’s natural curiosity and emerging leadership skills aligned with the Montessori Method and its emphasis on self-directed learning, Vince and Kelsey saw the value in giving her more time to grow with the teachers she already knew and trusted. “She loves her teachers at CiL, and we felt the additional time with them would make her more confident going into kindergarten,” says Kelsey.

The impact of CiL extends well beyond the classroom. At home, their daughter practices breathing exercises and self-soothing techniques, skills she learned from Andre Humphrey of Inner City Bliss (a.k.a. “Mr. Mindfulness”) at CiL. She also enjoys Music with Laurie, another favorite CiL extracurricular.

“All of the students and staff are happy. Gina and Sharyn are really good partners for us as we navigate the windy roads,” Kelsey says with enthusiasm. “And that is what a preschool should be!”

"It's Back-to-School Month, and we have some exciting news! For the eighth year in a row, our intergenerational preschool, Choice in Learning Montessori, has been named a Parents Press 'Best of the East Bay' Winner!!! We're incredibly grateful to everyone who voted — this honor wouldn't be possible without your support!

Did you know August is also National Wellness Month? If you joined us for Dishing, then you most certainly know! We gained a great deal of insight from our octogenarian guest, Miss Novanna Hunt. If you missed it, you can watch it here.

So often, we associate wellness with health. But in this episode, we addressed wellness as a combination of physical, emotional, and spiritual health. We are the sum of our parts, and our parts are not just physical!

We delved into what wellness means for Novanna in her eighties: connection, continued curiosity and learning, mobility, and maintenance were at the top of her list. She grounded us in the reality that movement is essential, and in order to keep moving, she employs a strategy of daily gratitude, spiritual practice, healthy eating, exercise, reading, engaging with friends, and participating in volunteer opportunities.

We also touched on intergenerational connections and the importance of truly listening. We don’t know everything simply because we are older. The world has changed, and each person has their own lived experience and knowledge that can contribute to a more communal sense of wellness.

So whether we are older adults, family caregivers, professionals, supporters, volunteers, or advocates, we each have a role in building communities where people are supported not simply to live longer, but to live well. At Choice in Aging, that commitment is at the heart of our work every day — and we are grateful to have you alongside us as we continue creating a future where every person has the opportunity to thrive and experience joy and meaning throughout their aging journey."
