A Wildcat Then. A Wildcat Always.

There’s nothing quite like seeing a Wildcat come back home.

Former Plano Senior High School running back Rex Burkhead dropped by today to encourage the team as they get ready to kick off the season tonight — and he didn’t come empty-handed. Rex made a generous donation to the Plano Wildcats football program as an Alumni player, investing in the next generation of Wildcats.

Rex knows what it means to wear the maroon and white. After starring at Plano Senior, he went on to play at Nebraska before being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent 10 seasons in the NFL with the Bengals, New England Patriots and Houston Texans, winning Super Bowl LIII with the Patriots. He finished his NFL career with 1,908 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns, 192 receptions and 1,534 receiving yards. (NFL.com⁠)

Now he’s giving back to the program that helped shape him — and reminding our players that the Wildcat family doesn’t end when you graduate.

Tonight was all about Wildcats Helmets with Dads — a special opportunity for our varsity players to share the tradition and the pride of being a Plano Wildcat with the dads who have been behind them every step of the way.

To all the Wildcat dads: thank you for the early mornings, late nights, long drives, endless encouragement, and for showing up — again and again. Your support helps build more than football players; it helps build young men.

Here’s to the dads who help make the Wildcat legacy stronger.

With deep gratitude for the legacy he built and the standard he set for Plano Wildcat football, we honor the life of Billy Ray Smith Jr.

A true legacy of Plano Senior High, Billy Ray helped lead the Wildcats to a Texas state championship in 1977 and a return to the state title game in 1978.

He went on to the University of Arkansas, where he became a 2× unanimous All-American and one of the most dominant defensive players in the country.

Drafted 5th overall in 1983, he spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the San Diego Chargers, earning All-Pro honors and a place on the franchise’s all-time team.

From Wildcat to Razorback to Charger, Billy Ray represented Plano with excellence at every level. His impact on the game—and on those who knew him—will not be forgotten.
