Home page for the Plainville MA Chess Club, formerly known as the Southeast Mass CC and the Sven Bras

The Plainville Chess Club was originally founded in Rhode Island in 1959. The club has always remained in RI and SE Mass, although changing locations and names several times throughout the years. We meet Wednesday nights from 7:30-11:30 year-round, and feature monthly USCF-rated tournaments, as well as skittles and blitz. We also feature special events throughout the year such as the Brask tournament , a unique format where you score points based on the number of moves it takes to win your game. Our membership includes all levels of players from beginner to master. We strive for a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy chess without the pressure of large entry fees and prize funds. Club dues and entry fees are minimal, but are set each year to cover the cost of running the club (rent, tourney fees etc). We occasionally offer small prizes for our tournaments as attendance and club finances permit. See the Dues and Fees section of our web site for the latest information. USCF (US Chess Federation) and club membership is required in order to play in our tournaments.

Zhiyang Tan won the 9/11 Memorial with a score of 4/5, 1/2 point ahead of David Golouski and Jim Aspinall. The event has been rated, and the web site updated with final standings, wallchart, and updated Yearly Contest standings.

Our next event is the Fall Classic, a 6-round Swiss running 10/7-11/18. We will miss one week of chess for the church fair, probably on 11/4 but will update everyone once they confirm. Time control will be the "classic" 40/90, SD/20;d/10. Two 1/2 point byes are available, byes for Rounds 5 and 6 must be requested prior to the start of Rd 4. Entry fee is $20, Jack Correia will be the TD.

If you are interested in our club and in playing in our rated OTB events, please check out our website at plainvillechessclub.org for details, and/or email us at [email protected]. US Chess Federation membership is required to play in our events.
