The hard truth about rescue work - we don’t save them all.
Early Thursday evening we received a few frantic messages from a woman concerning a sick cat that she found in her yard in Attleboro. This cat was skinny with matted fur and looked really sick - this poor feline needed a vet ASAP . Deb called multiple shelters in the area asking for help with no response and finally landed on Angelcat Haven.
After receiving pictures of the cat, we asked Deb to drive her to Precision Pet Urgent Care in Plainville where we would meet her and have the cat surrendered to us for her care.
We nervously waited to speak to the vet after the exam and it wasn’t good news. This poor cat was too far gone to help, she had free floating fluid in her abdomen, pale white gums, no muscle tone and infested with parasites.
So many thoughts crossed our mind: was it cancer, congestive heart disease, FIP? Where were her owners? How did she survive outside? I don’t think we will ever know her whole story but what we all realized very quickly was that we were not going to let her suffer any longer. Although it is hard to let them go, sometimes the most compassionate decision is to end their pain with peace and dignity.
We are forever grateful to Deb and her friend June who notice this sick cat, took her in and continued to call shelters until they reached someone that would finally help this cat.
Although this experience didn’t end with the outcome we had wanted, rest assured it ended with the outcome that was best for this feline and that’s all we can ask for.
