Happy Pride Month from all of us at Every Child, Inc.! πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

June is a time to celebrate, affirm, and stand alongside the LGBTQ+ community β€” and we do so proudly. As an affirming agency, we believe that every child deserves to be seen, valued, and loved for exactly who they are. That belief is woven into everything we do.

That commitment doesn't stop at the families and youth we serve. We are proud to be an affirming employer as well β€” because a team that feels seen and valued is a team that can truly show up for others.

To the LGBTQ+ youth, families, community members, and colleagues we are honored to walk alongside β€” we see you, we celebrate you, and we are committed to showing up for you every single day.

May is coming to a close β€” but our commitment to the children and families of southwestern Pennsylvania never does.

Foster Care Awareness Month gave us a chance to pause, reflect, and share some of the hard realities facing kids in our region. Over 1,000 children in Allegheny County are in out-of-home care. Fewer families are stepping up to foster than ever before. The need is real and it is urgent.

But so is the hope.

We've seen what happens when a community shows up β€” when a family opens their home, when a donor invests in services, when a neighbor simply learns more and spreads the word. That ripple effect is everything. It's what drives the work we do every single day at ECI, and it's what fuels our excitement as we prepare to open our new outpatient mental health center this summer.

Thank you for being part of this. The month may be ending, but the mission is just getting started. πŸ’™

There's a lot people get wrong about foster care. Let's talk about it. πŸ‘‡

"I'm too old to foster."
There's no upper age limit on showing up for a child. Life experience, patience, and stability are exactly what kids in foster care need β€” and those tend to come with time.

"Foster care is a last resort."
For many children, foster care is the bridge to something better. It's where safety begins, healing starts, and the path to a permanent family becomes possible.

"You'll just lose them in the end."
Permanency is always the goal β€” whether that means a child returning to a stable biological family or finding a forever home through adoption. When a child goes home to safety, that's not a loss. That's the work working.

The more we understand foster care, the better we can support the children and families who need it most. ECI has been walking alongside those families in southwestern Pennsylvania for decades β€” and there's always a way to get involved. πŸ’™

We want to take a moment to talk about what foster care really is.

It's not about finding a bed for a child. It's about staying with a family β€” birth, foster, kin β€” through one of the hardest seasons of their lives. It's showing up consistently. It's listening before solving. It's believing that connection is the work.

Foster care done well is engagement, not just placement. It's the long, patient, often invisible work of helping a family find its footing again.

To every foster parent, every caseworker, every kin caregiver doing this work β€” thank you. You are the engagement. You are the difference. πŸ’™

If this work moves you, there's a place for you in it. Whether you've considered fostering, want to support a family who does, or simply want to stand with the people doing this work every day β€” we'd love to hear from you.

Today is Pennsylvania Primary Election Day β€” and your vote matters.

At Every Child, Inc., we believe every child deserves safety, support, and a family that’s equipped to care for them. The elected officials chosen through elections like today’s help shape the policies and funding that make that possible β€” from child welfare and foster care systems to mental health services for kids and families in our communities.

If you’re voting in person, polls are open until 8 p.m. Make a plan to go if you haven’t already.

Your voice is part of how we build a stronger future for the children and families we serve. πŸ—³οΈ

The people doing this work β€” family-based mental health clinicians, child welfare workers, family preservation staff β€” deserve employers who show up for them the way they show up for families every day.

At Every Child, Inc., we believe that means:
- Honesty about how hard the work is
- Real tools and real support β€” not just good intentions
- Leadership that's actually reachable
- A workplace that's genuinely inclusive β€” in practice, not just on paper

We're hiring, and we're looking for people who care deeply about this work.

If that sounds like your kind of place, we'd love to connect. πŸ”— everychildinc.org/employment

For LGBTQ+ youth in foster care, the question isn't just "will I be safe?" β€” it's "will I be accepted for who I am?"

Research estimates that between 20 and 34 percent of youth in foster care identify as LGBTQ+, far outpacing the general youth population. Many of them entered care carrying not just the trauma of family disruption, but the particular pain of being told that who they are isn't welcome.

Affirming placements change that. And they change outcomes β€” measurably and meaningfully.

At Every Child, Inc., we are proud to be an inclusive and affirming agency for every child we serve and every family who serves alongside us. We're sharing more about what that means, what the research tells us, and what affirming foster care actually looks like in practice.
