Residents of Fayetteville, Georgia, first noticed something was wrong when their home water pressure mysteriously plummeted. A subsequent county utility investigation revealed that a massive data center campus owned by Quality Technology Services (QTS) had two unmetered water connections.

One connection was entirely unknown to the utility, and the other was unlinked to the company's account. In total, the facility consumed over 29 million gallons of unaccounted-for water—equivalent to 44 Olympic-sized swimming pools—during a period of construction and site preparation, far exceeding agreed-upon limits.

While QTS has since paid the $147,474 retroactive bill and the county attributed the oversight to a transition to smart meters that left some connections off the new billing system, local anger continues to boil.

The revelation surfaced just as county officials urged residents to scale back their own water usage due to statewide drought conditions. Despite the massive unauthorized draw, local utility officials declined to fine the data center, calling them a vital partner.

This leniency has galvanized community pushback, prompting the Fayetteville City Council to ban new data center developments and fueling a larger political debate over the massive resource demands of the tech industry.
