Our PTA is hosting a Black History Month event, “To Black History and Beyond” and would like your help!
We hope to encourage student participation to present our community with a living museum celebrating the influence of Black, African American and African Diaspora people and culture on the present and modern world. The idea is to take Black History from the past to the present, encouraging our students to expand their understanding of Black, African American and African Diaspora contributions to our country and the world beyond the same, well-known historical figures or events. History is being created as we are living.
The Concept: Have the students identify something currently relevant to their life, anything they love to do, see, hear, and/or taste, and trace how it may have been historically influenced by Black, African American and African Diaspora people and culture. It can be art, fashion, music, food, inventions, etc. The possibilities are endless!
The Exhibits: The student will then present their findings in an exhibit format which will culminate in a living museum that can be shared with our Stewart community. The exhibit may be a display of something they have created, a presentation of their research, etc. This can be done as a class, a group or individually.
An Example: A student who loves fashion may research the history of a specific pattern, item of clothing or style of dress to determine how it may have been influenced at any point by Black, African American and African Diaspora people and culture.
