That's a wrap! It's been an incredible week at the ###I Convention of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters! Our International election was held and it's a special honor to have our own Principal Officer and Secretary-Treasurer, Karla Schumann elected to the office of Western Region Vice President! General President O'Brien and General Secretary - Treasurer Zuckerman have set the tone and pace to grow and strengthen our great union, and this week shared their vision for the next five years. Under the current administration we have organized over 100,000 new members nationwide and we're just getting started. The U.S. House by way of a discharge petition passed the bipartisan Faster Labor Contracts Act that if passed by the Senate would force greedy companies to the bargaining table within 10 days when newly organized workers win a certified election. We heard first hand from members like our own Mark McCall (Republic Services), Darwin Drake (UPS), and Charlie Jones (UPS) about the battles fought and won since the last convention. We also heard from a bipartisan group of Congressional leaders who recognize that it is the hard working men and women of this country whose interests must be served and not only the few at the top. The Dropkick Murphys were a special treat playing a great show for all the members in attendance. That performance reminded us all that the big question is a simple one. Which side are you on?

In 2023, General President Sean M. O’Brien initiated a project to interview Teamsters officers, staff, and external operatives to document the period from 1975 to 1999. This timeframe includes: establishment of the government consent decree in 1989; first democratic election of officers in 1991; first term of General President Ron Carey; 1994 national freight strike; second democratic election of officers in 1996; 1997 UPS strike; 1998 rerun election of International Union officers; and, the election of General President James P. Hoffa. The interviews were conducted by the History Factory, an independent organization, and will be donated to the Teamsters Labor History Research Center at the George Washington University. Each of the interviews and transcripts are provided in their entirety and unedited.

TEAMSTERS, DOJ FILE JOINT MOTION TO END FINAL ORDER AND CONSENT DECREE

Today, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (the Southern District) jointly filed a motion to amend the Final Order and the Consent Decree, ending federal government monitorship of the union.

In 1989, the Southern District and the Teamsters entered into a consent decree to eliminate organized crime influence within the union and ensure fair, democratic, member-driven elections. Over the past 37 years, the Teamsters have conducted nine elections and successfully eliminated corrupt elements from the union.

Since the election of Sean M. O’Brien as Teamsters General President in 2021, the Teamsters have built a new system of rigorous checks and balances in which every member complaint is investigated, and when appropriate, referred to legal authorities.

“Today marks a new era in the Teamsters. After 37 years, this filing marks an end to the longest monitorship of any union, corporation, nonprofit, or public entity in the history of the United States. Over the past four years, we have developed a system of internal controls and created a culture of vigilance in our union. Our efforts have proven that we can police our own, and the controls we have put in place are more stringent than any labor organization in the country,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien.

The motion requires approval by the Federal District Court and the Honorable Loretta Preska, who has overseen the consent decree monitorships since 2002.

Earlier this year, the Honorable Barbara Jones (ret.), the Independent Review Officer, conducted an assessment of the International Union’s internal disciplinary systems and audit functions and concluded that the union has “developed the institutional tools, processes, and procedures necessary to adequately detect, investigate, and resolve instances of major corruption” and has the capacity to assume responsibility for internal processes.

O’BRIEN, ZUCKERMAN REELECTED TO SECOND FIVE-YEAR TERM LEADING TEAMSTERS

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced today that Sean M. O’Brien and Fred Zuckerman have been reelected to another five-year term as General President and General Secretary-Treasurer, respectively, renewing a mandate for powerful, militant leadership on behalf of 1.3 million rank-and-file Teamsters across North America.

The O’Brien-Zuckerman Teamsters United slate was elected by white ballot at the union’s 31st International Convention in Las Vegas following a secret ballot vote of 1,572 delegates. All voting delegates were democratically elected to the convention by rank-and-file members from more than 330 local unions across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. No opposition candidates received enough votes to meet the Teamsters’ constitutionally required threshold to challenge the O’Brien-Zuckerman team.

“This victory belongs to rank-and-file Teamsters. When we were sworn into office four years ago, our leadership team committed to building a bigger, faster, stronger union, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. We’ve organized more than 100,000 new members, won historic agreements including a record contract for 340,000 members at UPS, and put rank-and-file members back in the driver’s seat. The Teamsters is now the most aggressive, effective, and respected labor union on Earth,” O’Brien said. “Over the next five years, we have a lot of work ahead of us. The Teamsters face big fights at UPS and Amazon, and we are prepared to tackle those head on with the militancy and organization that has defined our administration. We will keep growing and never stop working for the members.”

“The Teamsters are stronger, more secure, and more prepared to take on greedy employers than at any point in our 123-year history. We have more than $1 billion in total assets, and our Strike and Defense Fund stands at approximately $365 million, providing the ammunition to take on the boss and protect our members,” Zuckerman said. “The Teamsters have accomplished so much to expand our ranks, exert real political influence, and safeguard our members in an ever-evolving economy. But we’re just getting started. The future is bright and the state of the union is strong in the Teamsters.”

O’Brien is a fourth-generation Teamster from Local 25 in Charlestown, Mass. Zuckerman joined the Teamsters more than four decades ago as a rank-and-file member in Houston and later went on to lead Local 89 in Louisville, Ky. Together, they bring an aggressive grassroots approach to taking on employers and prioritizing member involvement in the union.

Over the next five years, O’Brien and Zuckerman have pledged to continue the fight at UPS and Amazon, strengthen Teamsters density in core industries, defend and improve contracts across every division of the union, and build even bigger bipartisan coalitions to pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act and other legislation to benefit working people.
The O’Brien-Zuckerman Teamsters United slate will take the oath of office in March 2027.
