Boilermakers Local 627 attended the 2026 New Mexico Energy Symposium this week. The message was clear. Powering New Mexico’s future.

Tara Lujan Joseph Sanchez P.E. and Scott Lopez, MBA

Thank you for allowing Boilermakers Local 627 to give a short presentation about us and Local 4 that cover New Mexico.

Boilermakers understand that discussions about energy policy, infrastructure investment, economic development, and community benefits are not abstract conversations. They become real projects built by real people in communities across New Mexico.

Boilermakers are those real local people from coal impacted communities that need to transition into other technologies.

Whether we're talking about power generation, water systems, industrial facilities, emerging energy technologies, geothermal energy process vessels, natural gas, and all reliable energy. Success ultimately depends on partnerships. It requires government, industry, Labor, utilities, economic development organizations, tribal communities, and all stakeholders working together to drive these projects forward.

The challenges facing New Mexico are complex. Communities are being asked to modernize aging infrastructure, prepare for population growth, improve resilience, strengthen critical services, and do more with limited resources. At the same time, those challenges create opportunities to build stronger communities and create lasting economic benefits throughout our state.

Boilermakers from Local 627 and Local 4 have been struggling in New Mexico. Anywhere there is a need for skilled and trained workers in welding, rigging, mechanical, apprentices and helpers please reach out.

Our next step is we must get our affiliated contractors pre qualified and set up with the developers procurement teams. End result is getting local workers boots on the ground.

Boilermakers Local 627 would like to thank PNM Resources President and CEO Don Tarry for inviting us to sit at New Mexicos biggest utilities table with him. It was a great introduction.

Today at Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller’s presentation to the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. They spoke about data centers and the power needed from the state to support them.

PNM has a lot of upcoming work to provide power for New Mexico and we are glad to support and be at the forefront. Anything we can offer to assist and of course get boots on the ground for their projects.

Boilermakers Local 627 would like to welcome a newly indentured group of apprentices to our local. From our recruiting efforts last year all these apprentices are from pools 1 and 2 and helmets to hardhats.

This is going to be a great group. We are glad to bring them and start training for the upcoming work.

Salt River Project

Boilermaker Local 627 fully supports this technology for long duration energy storage.

At the 2024 LDES Symposium we spoke about coal impacted communities and the transition of skilled and trained workforce from the closures of coal power plants and opportunities where those workers can go.

The bladder pressure vessel in the closed loop CO2 System is 100% where Boilermaker would be your best ally. Our community deserves something like this due to the reduced manhours we have seen from all the coal plant closures.

This project would revitalize our apprenticeship program and help us retain the trained workforce.

The 19 megawatt (MW), 10-hour carbon dioxide-based (CO2) battery system is planned to be co-located on the site of SRP’s Coronado Generating Station (CGS) in St. Johns, Arizona. It will store enough energy to power approximately 4,275 homes for 10 hours. The pilot will be part of Google and SRP’s effort to advance new non-lithium-ion long duration energy storage technologies. We’re innovating and creatively exploring new ways to provide power to Arizona’s future.
