Last night, Local 5360 President, Paramedic Captain Brandon Fall and Vice President, Firefighter EMT Marissa Essner were recognized with multiple other first responders from Owosso Fire and Corunna Area Ambulance for their roles in responding to a Mass Casualty Incident on September 1st, 2026. Local 5360 is proud of the actions of our members everyday from the mundane to the extraordinary. Day in and day out our members exude excellence and strive to serve our community better each day! We love when our members are recognized for these efforts as it just helps drive it home that we have some of the best practitioners and work with even more great practitioners! Good work to everyone in mitigating this incident as quickly and efficiently as ever and putting the community first. Local 5350 would also like to recognize a new Probationary member who was unfortunately missed in the original article. Firefighter Paramedic Gerald Brown was 3rd riding with our crew that day during his orientation shifts. Congrats to all on this recognition and keep swinging for the fences!
About six runners and two first responders were transported to the hospital for heat-related illnesses during the Corunna Earlybird Invitational on Sept. 1 at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds, according to Brian Matthies, operations manager for Corunna Area Ambulance Service. Another EMS responder was treated and released at the scene, and at least six additional student-athletes were taken for care on their own.
Temperatures that day reached 90 degrees with a heat index approaching 100 degrees, according to previous Argus-Press reporting.
In emergency management, a “casualty” includes both injuries and deaths. A mass-casualty incident focuses on treating and transporting a large surge of living, injured or ill patients.
Eighteen first responders, two central dispatch employees and the Owosso Memorial Emergency Department were recognized as part of the response effort. More than a dozen were at the McCurdy Event Center in Corunna on Tuesday to receive a Commendation of Merit award.
