Monday morning we welcomed Mrs. Dockins and her Grade 2 students from Katahdin Schools! It was a morning full of creating, collaborating, discovering, exploring, and learning in nature.

School visits to engage in self-directed learning and experience nature and wilderness through movement and activity are made possible by the generosity of the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, the Quimby Family Foundation, and by generous donations from those who support our mission.

Please join us in welcoming artist Risica Caputi to the 2026 Creative Arts Team at KCFF! 🎨🌿

After fracturing her dominant left wrist in 2023, Risica turned to art as a way to cope with the pain, surgeries, and recovery. With no prior experience in visual art, she began experimenting with different mediums, eventually finding a love for linoleum relief printing and mixed media painting.

Inspired by lines, organic movement, and beauty in unexpected forms, her artwork ranges from realism to abstraction. In just three short years, Risica’s work has appeared in exhibitions with Ten Moir Gallery and Art Agent Maine, in ArtSloth Magazine, and in galleries across Maine, including the Wintergreen Arts Center and the Bangor Public Library.💫

Many of you may already recognize Risica from recent KCFF events, including our Homeschool Hangout and the Fiddlers & Fiddlehead Festival at the Lumbermen’s Museum, where she shared the magic of Cyanotype Printing with our community. 🌿💙🌞

We are thrilled to have Risica joining our Creative Arts Team and can’t wait for you to experience the creativity, curiosity, and inspiration she brings to The Orchard.

Welcome, Risica! Stay tuned for upcoming art workshops! ✨

As the school year comes to a close, we need to share a heartfelt THANK YOU to Michelle Birmingham, substitute Ashley Savage, and to the families in our community who entrusted us with your children during the 2026–2027 Katahdin Cubs season. 💛🌲

We are so grateful to partner with Katahdin Schools to offer a program that gives children daily opportunities to connect with the natural world while building confidence, independence, and lifelong skills.

With Michelle’s thoughtful guidance and expert facilitation, children are encouraged to problem solve, collaborate, create, explore, and think critically in meaningful and hands-on ways.

Through climbing, dragging, swinging, hiking, building, observing, experimenting, and taking age-appropriate risks, children strengthen not only their bodies, but also their self-esteem and sense of belonging.

At Katahdin Cubs, children are encouraged to:
• Make observations and discoveries;
• Satisfy their natural curiosities;
• Hike trails and climb logs;
• Appreciate the beauty of nature;
• Build understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them;
• Ask questions, experiment, and pursue their own interests.

Thank you for believing in the power of nature-based learning and for allowing us to be part of your child’s growth and development this year. We are incredibly grateful for this community. 🍃
