What if the words you use every day are quietly working against the animals you fight for?

Meet Brittany Michelson. She/Her.

Brittany is an animal rights activist, rescuer, and writer whose work has helped shape the voice of the modern animal rights movement. She is the author and editor of Voices for Animal Liberation: Inspirational Accounts by Animal Rights Activists and the founder of Desert Oasis Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary in Tucson, AZ. Her dedication to animals lives in everything she does, from the words she writes to the lives she saves.
Brittany will be leading one of the most thought provoking workshops at this year’s Kind Hearted Campout.

Language Matters: The Power and Etymology of Words within Animal Rights

The words we use every single day shape how the world understands and values animals. Some of those words reinforce speciesist ideas without us even knowing it.
This workshop digs into the etymology and power of language across the animal rights landscape. Examining the everyday words that quietly reinforce speciesism and how intentional anti-speciesist language can challenge those ideas and shift the way people see animals entirely.

Because if we want to change the world for animals we have to start with the words we use to talk about them.
Come ready to listen differently. Come ready to speak more intentionally. Come ready to use your words as tools for liberation.

The Kind Hearted Campout is an annual all-inclusive vegan community convergence held at Harrison Serenity Ranch on Palomar Mountain, California.

Now in its sixth year. Arrive Thursday. Depart Sunday. Just show up with your tent.

💗 WOMEN CRUSH WEDNESDAY 💗

When we asked our community who inspires them in animal rights, one name kept coming up over and over: Yvette Baker. Not once, not twice, again and again. So this month’s WCW picked itself.

We’ve admired Yvette for years, her voice, her fire, the way she’s never once separated the fight for animals from the fight for people.

“Yvette Baker is a Los Angeles-based writer, social critic, and total liberation activist. Her work and activism have been devoted to exposing and critically analyzing the intersections of human and beyond-human oppression through an Afro-Indigenous lens, aiming to empower the vegan movement as a movement for total liberation.
She has been a lifelong social justice advocate, with her efforts crossing into the animal rights movement at a young age. She has worked with various animal rights organizations as an educator and grassroots organizer, highlighting the need to understand systemic oppression and the principle of collective liberation as one of the most effective tools to build bridges between movements and work together toward common goals.”

Today, Yvette is Executive Director of APEX Advocacy, a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) building B.I.P.O.C. leadership, narrative power, and cross-movement infrastructure for animal justice. APEX empowers advocates through grassroots action, media storytelling, and policy advocacy, advancing interconnected struggles for collective liberation.

A beautiful soul, inside and out. Yvette, thank you for showing us what it looks like to fight for everyone.

Every year one artist puts their heart into a design that every single camper wears on the mountain. This year that artist is someone who has already given so much to this community and we could not be more grateful.

Meet Mathias Moretti. Painter. Tattoo Artist. Carpenter. Activist. And the creative mind behind this year’s official Kind Hearted Campout T-shirt.

Mathias has been creating art nearly his entire life. A tattoo artist since 2006, a carpenter for the love of it since 2001, and proudly vegan since Christmas 2010. His hands have built things, designed things, and transformed things in ways that leave a lasting mark on everything he touches.

And if you have ever been to Saving Animals and Healing Hearts Sanctuary you have seen his work firsthand. Mathias is a dedicated volunteer who has literally built so much of what makes that sanctuary the special place it is. His talent shows up in the art on your skin, the structures at the sanctuary, and now on the shirt every camper will wear this October on Palomar Mountain.

And here is the best part. The design stays a secret until you get to camp. Every registered camper will receive their shirt at check in and the reveal is part of the magic. You are going to love it.

This is what it looks like when a community takes care of each other.

Thank you Mathias. From every camper who will wear your design on that mountain. We are so honored.

Follow his work and reach out.

You think you know each other. You have no idea how much you are alike.

This is a space to slow down. To be vulnerable. To really listen to WHO each other are. Not just what we do or who and what we fight for. But WHO we actually are underneath all of it.

When we slow down long enough to truly hear each other something unexpected happens.

We realize how much we have in common.

The same doubts. The same fears. The same unseen struggles that so many of us carry quietly while showing up for the movement every single day.

We think we know each other. But do we really KNOW each other?

You might be surprised how much of yourself you see in the person sitting across that circle from you.

Come ready to listen. Come ready to be heard. Come ready to feel less alone.

The Kind Hearted Empathy Circle is waiting for you on Palomar Mountain.

About the Kind Hearted Campout
The Kind Hearted Campout is an annual all-inclusive vegan community convergence held on the breathtaking grounds of Palomar Mountain, California. Now in its sixth year, this four day gathering brings together animal rights advocates, vegan activists, artists, educators, and open-hearted humans from all walks of life for an experience that is equal parts empowering, joyful, and transformative.

Over four days and three nights, campers gather for Know Your Rights legal workshops, artivism projects, activist strategy sessions, yoga and meditation, a costume dance party, a sticker swap, campfire conversations, communal vegan meals, and so much more. Every moment is designed to educate, inspire, and sustain the advocates who show up every day for the animals.

This is not just a campout. It is a space where kindness is the culture, empathy drives every conversation, and every person who arrives as a stranger leaves as family.

All inclusive. All are welcome. Just show up with your tent.

The moment you arrive at Harrison Serenity Ranch on Palomar Mountain something shifts.

The air is different. The people are different. And within hours you find yourself creating, learning, and connecting in ways you never have anywhere else. With people who just get it.

That is the Kind Hearted Campout.

This is a place where art is not just an activity. It is a language. Where education is not just a workshop. It is a revelation. Where every conversation goes deeper than you expected and every creative moment reminds you why this work matters.

Pick up a brush and paint alongside fellow advocates on a collaborative canvas that grows all weekend long. Sit in a circle and learn things about your legal rights, the movement, and yourself that you will carry for the rest of your life. Watch a stranger become a creative collaborator. Watch a collaborator become a lifelong friend.

The mountain has a way of stripping away everything that does not matter and leaving only what does. Art. Knowledge. Real connection. Real community.

Four days of nature, creativity, education, nourishing food, and a community of like minded humans who showed up for the same reason you did. Because they care deeply. Because they feel things fully. Because they are tired of feeling alone in a world that does not always understand them.

And then they find this place. And these people. And everything changes.

Come learn something that changes you. Come create something that means something. Come find your people on the mountain.

The system does not want you to think for yourself. Art and activism say otherwise. 🎨📣

Join Alex Aria Enriquez, The Vegan Painter, for one of the most thought provoking sessions at the 6th Annual Kind Hearted Campout.

Your Greatest Act of Resistance is Creation.

Alex will break down how mainstream society works to control the narrative and keep the public compliant. And more importantly, how you can break free.

Through art and conscious living, Alex will show you how creativity is not just self expression. It is resistance. It is one of the most powerful and unapologetic tools we have to challenge oppression, amplify voices, and push the animal rights movement forward.

And it does not stop at the talk.

Alex will be actively painting all weekend long as part of an ongoing art project that will grow and evolve throughout the entire campout. Pick up a brush. Add your voice to the canvas. Leave your mark on something bigger than yourself.

When you pick up a brush you are not just making something beautiful. You are making a statement.

Come ready to think differently. Come ready to create boldly. Come ready to rebel.

Meet the artist leading this session.

Alex Aria Enriquez. The Vegan Painter. Activist. Creator.

A visionary artist whose work lives at the intersection of creativity and animal rights advocacy. Alex brings both his brush and his beliefs to the mountain for a talk that will challenge how you see the world and inspire you to use your art as a force for change.

💥This is a workshop every single person needs!💥

We are honored to welcome Social Justice Attorney Jerry Friedman to the 6th Annual Kind Hearted Campout for a Know Your Rights workshop that is not just for activists. It is for every human being who wants to understand their rights and how to protect them.

WWJD. What Would Jerry Do?

Jerry would show up informed, protected, and ready. And after this workshop so will you.

Whether you are brand new to advocacy or have been on the front lines for years, knowing your legal rights is one of the most powerful tools you can carry. What you can say. What you can do. What you are protected from. And what to do when things do not go the way they should.

Knowledge is protection. And protection is power.
Jerold D. Friedman has dedicated his career to social justice and will bring real legal expertise to the mountain in a way that is accessible, empowering, and eye opening for everyone in attendance.

This is the kind of workshop that stays with you long after you leave camp.

Come learn. Come prepared. Come ready to protect yourself and the movement.
