Thanks to Catharine Haight, the two-times great grand niece of Erastus Granger, we now have a face to go with the story. Check out the July 7, 2021 post on Erastus here. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1L8J3McGsA/

This amazing image comes to us from Cathy Contant, by way of the Isaac Mullie Family Foundation, and shows two soldiers anyone familiar with the story of the 111th New York should know. The man in the middle is Thomas Geer and on the right is his best friend Judson Hicks, both of Company A. Thomas watched his friend fall while carrying the regiment’s colors at Gettysburg.

The soldier on the left is a mystery. Presumably also from Company A, the picture appears to be taken soon after uniforms and equipment were issued but before rank was sewn on the frock coats…Hicks was mustered in as the 7th Corporal of the company.

So, we need your help identifying the big fellow on the left. Drop a comment if you know his identity or have an idea on how to find him.
