Congratulations to Christine Leamon for winning our April Photo Contest, topic of Silliest Bird Photo of the Year, with her Blue Jay, smiling for the camera (that actually has a meal worm in its mouth).

Congratulations, Christie!

18 people attended MCAS Birds & Breakfast this morning at Heron’s Nest Nature Park. Starting at 7 AM, under shady trails, temperature 74°, it was a lovely walk through the park, seeing 32 species of birds. Highlights were the island rookery with so many Anhinga nests, and watching a Red-shouldered Hawk family.

Special thanks to Debbie Carr for keeping our eBird list. Photos taken randomly from our eBird list.

Our next Birds & Breakfast will be held on Saturday, June 20, at Heritage Harbor Park, 700 River Heritage Park, meeting at 7 AM. Breakfast following at Cracker Barrel.

All are welcome!

On Monday, April 27, eighteen people joined Kathy Doddridge for a bird walk through Conservatory Park. The group consisted of experienced birders and many newcomers. Together they tallied 31 species. The highlights included Great Crested Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, nest-building Tufted Titmouse and a nest of Great Blue Herons. It was a great opportunity for the group to test their skills on bird songs as we sought out Northern Parula, Carolina Wren, and Brown Thrashers.

Many thanks to Doryce Wheeler for keeping the eBird checklist and to all who submitted photos via eBird. We look forward to seeing many of you during the MCAS summer Birds & Breakfast events. Check manateeaudubon.org/Events for the scheduled dates.
Our first Birds & Breakfast will be held on Saturday, May 16, at Heron’s Nest Nature Park, 6399 Tupelo Trail, Bradenton. Meet at 7 AM so we can beat the heat, and then breakfast at First Watch. All welcome!
