Let’s Talk Teen Drinking

As a new school year begins, it’s a great time to talk with teens about alcohol—and the good news is that most young people are choosing not to drink.

📊 The latest data:

• In 2025, 13.7% of youth ages 12–20 reported drinking alcohol in the past month, while 7.9% reported binge drinking. That means the vast majority did NOT report current alcohol use.
— SAMHSA, 2025 NSDUH

📉 Underage alcohol use has also continued to decline over time, showing that prevention, education, and positive social norms can make a difference.
— SAMHSA, 2025 NSDUH

💡 Why does it matter?

Alcohol use during adolescence can affect the developing brain and is associated with risks such as injuries, impaired decision-making, and other health and safety concerns.

🎯 What can families & communities do?

✅ Have open, honest, non-judgmental conversations.
✅ Help teens build healthy coping and decision-making skills.
✅ Support youth-led prevention efforts like the North River Youth Coalition.
✅ Encourage fun, alcohol-free activities and gatherings.
✅ Reinforce the positive message: Not drinking is a healthy and common choice for young people.

Together, we can continue building a community where substance use is not the norm—and where young people have the support they need to thrive.

Prevention starts with a conversation.

Start the Conversation. They’re Listening.

Talking with youth about alcohol and substance use doesn’t have to be awkward or complicated. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply start the conversation—and keep it going.

💬 Ask questions.
👂 Listen without judgment.
❤️ Let them know you’re there for them.
🤝 Have ongoing conversations about the choices and pressures they face.

SAMHSA’s Talk. They Hear You.® campaign reminds parents, caregivers, educators, and other trusted adults that conversations can make a difference in helping young people make healthy choices.

At North River Prevention Partners, we believe prevention starts with connection. When youth know they have adults who will listen, support, and encourage them, they have another reason to make positive choices.

Don’t wait for a problem to start talking. Start the conversation today.

🚫 Myth vs. ✅ Fact: Teen Va**ng Edition

Myth:
"Va**ng is just flavored water v***r — it’s harmless."

Fact:
❌ Not true! Vapes contain ni****ne, toxic chemicals, and ultrafine particles that can harm the lungs and brain — especially in teens whose brains are still developing.
Ni****ne in v**es is highly addictive, and many teens who v**e don’t realize they’re inhaling it.

Why this matters:

Ni****ne affects memory, attention, and learning

Va**ng increases the risk of addiction and mental health issues

Many e-cigarettes contain harmful substances like formaldehyde and heavy metals

Let’s bust the myths with facts! 💬💥
Your health is worth protecting.
