Please do not destroy this mound. This is not an ant hill.
It is the trap door of the ant lion. It may not be pretty, but it is harmless to us, and deadly to ants. This pic was taken from a shell driveway. You will often see the mound between cement slabs or pavers.
The adults eat pollen and some species eat aphids.

This ghost kitty showed up a few months ago. She was very skinny. I couldn't get near her. She would run off even if she just heard me.
She climbed some shrubbery and got into my fenced in area, which is cat proof. Apparently, it is escape proof as far as getting out, but not getting in.
I've been trying to trap her for several days.
She is on her way to be spayed.

Rescue work often is done quietly, without fan fair, but it is done by people with big hearts and is never ending.

Seven Blue Jays came to the Fur and Feather Pet Rescue Pet Rescue property today, from our friends at Birds in Helping Hands.

Wild spaces are shrinking rapidly and many wild creatures need a safe space.

We have woods, a pond, and always provide food and water to help all of our residents.

All donations are used 100% for food and supplies. We have no paid employees.

The Carolina Wren Story.
Every year the wrens will attempt to nest inside the garage, where we raise and rehab other birds. Obviously, the door is not always going to be open to give them easy access. Every year I remove the attempted nest, which encourages them to nest outside, such as in a hanging planter.
This year, I didn't catch it in time and for the first time in twenty years, they hatched out babies in the garage.
This was a real dilemma since I didn't know how the parents would be able to feed them regularly.
I thought about hand feeding them, but that would be a big undertaking, which I was willing to do if the parents couldn't get to them.
The other problem is that a raccoon has been walking around during the day and taking food from the garage.
I didn't want to encourage that, as well as endangering any birds being rehabbed.
While the door was shut I noticed the adult wrens coming and going through roof air vents, making it unnecessary to worry about their access.
Today the babies left the nest and are chirping in the rafters. It looks like there may be four or five of them.
Now I know that they can nest in future years without any concerns.

A few weeks ago, we gained some pigeon friends from our friends at Birds In Helping Hands. They have made themselves right at home.
Imagine going from the streets to living this type of life.

At FUR AND FEATHER PET RESCUE, we honor our pigeon and dove rescues.
Think about how remarkable their survival skills are and how they survive, often by a meager living, especially in the cities. Help all our birds during this freezing weather. The natural food sources and handouts are just not there right now.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Most people don’t realize just how incredible pigeons truly are.
These gentle birds aren’t just loyal partners—they’re brilliant, complex beings. Tucked inside their beaks are tiny magnetic crystals, which act like nature’s GPS. With them, pigeons can sense the Earth’s magnetic field and travel thousands of miles with stunning precision. They can also hear frequencies too low for us to detect and read polarized light patterns in the sky—like seeing a secret code hidden in daylight.
Their intelligence is no small thing either. Studies have shown that pigeons can count, recognize their own reflections, understand abstract ideas, and even grasp probability—sometimes outperforming young children in cognitive tests. While we see just three colors, pigeons see four, including ultraviolet. That means they see vivid patterns on each other’s feathers that are completely invisible to us.
When raising their young, pigeons produce a special milk-like substance in their throats to nourish their chicks—something they share with doves, flamingos, and emperor penguins. And in flight? These birds can cruise at over 60 mph for long stretches.
They also form lifelong bonds with their mates. But just like us, environmental stress can affect their relationships. Their communication is equally layered—they use different coos and calls for danger, love, and territory, and they can recognize the unique voice of a familiar bird even from far away.
History has seen their courage too. During wartime, a pigeon named Cher Ami delivered a message that saved 194 soldiers—even after losing a leg.
Sadly, despite all this, we’ve forgotten our connection to them. Pigeons were once our companions, messengers, and helpers—but many were abandoned when we no longer “needed” them. They stayed close to humans in cities, because that’s what they knew.
They don’t need much—some oats, bird seed, clean water. But what they deserve is empathy, not disdain.
Pigeons are not pests. They are intelligent, emotional, deeply social beings. They remember us. It’s time we remember them. Narrative by David Attenborough Fans
