Did you know the first book of photographs was a self-published collection of botanical Cyanotype prints by photographer and artist Anna Atkins in 1843?
Cyanotype printing is a technique that uses UV light exposure and a simple chemical process to create striking blue photographic images.
Anna used the process to document different species of British algae. The prints offered enough detail to distinguish between species - and they are incredibly beautiful! Prior to her work, botanical specimens were drawn exclusively by hand.
Come to our 2026 Annual Meeting this Saturday, June 27th, to try your hand at cyanotype printing! We will provide all the supplies, but of course you can bring your own botanical samples if youโd like ๐๐ฟ
