Sam Houston's father died in September of 1806 when Sam was just 13 years old. He died suddenly at Dennis Callighan's Tavern near present-day Callaway, Virginia.

He had one of the finest libraries on the frontier, and young Sam began to indulge himself in the great literature of Greece and Rome and the Renaissance. For a boy who hated school, he was one of the most well-read settlers on the frontier and memorized long passages from Alexander Pope's translation of Homer's Iliad.

The concept of Greek honor is central to the Iliad, and this was undoubtedly the seed corn of that principle which became so dominant in Houston's life.
