This week's Do ONE Thing: Send a Father’s Day card to a resident. Simply address the envelope to “Activities Department.” The next line on the envelope can say “For a Father.” Then write the facility address as normal. Another option, of course, is to simply drop off a card at the front desk.

This week's Do ONE Thing: Send a card to a nursing home resident. You don’t need a name; just address to “A resident” or to “The Activities Department” (and they’ll give it to someone). If you have kiddos, get them involved by having them draw or color something to add in the card! Or, for extra fun, include a blank coloring page the resident can color.

This week’s Do One Thing is in memory of our friend, Tanya.
Tanya loved all things fashionable and sparkly. She never missed an opportunity to fix her hair, freshen her makeup, or admire a pretty outfit.

This week, we invite you to help bring a little sparkle and dignity to nursing home residents in her memory. Consider donating small personal care or cosmetic items like lipstick, blush, a cosmetic bag, costume jewelry, nail polish, etc. Sometimes the smallest things help someone feel seen, special, and beautiful.

Tanya was such an encouragement to us and our endeavors at FFKY. She believed in what we do because she knew what it is like to be alone in a nursing facility. We loved her and "adopted" her long before we started FFKY, and she was so proud of us when we officially began our organization. She especially loved our Faith and Funnies and was the first person to encourage me to put the devotionals into a book. (More to come on things we've learned along the way with Tanya in these final weeks.)

The Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 established federal resident rights and quality standards for all facilities receiving Medicare or Medicaid. It established that nursing home residents are not just patients in a facility — they are people with rights, choices, dignity, and a voice in their own lives. Among these guaranteed rights are the right to be treated with dignity and respect, the right to visitors, the right to privacy, the right to manage personal affairs, and the right to make choices with regards to all aspects of their care.
