63 years ago today, a quarter million people filled the National Mall demanding jobs and freedom.

They came from every corner of this country, by bus, by car, on foot, carrying the belief that a democracy which works for some is no democracy at all. What happened that day changed what this nation understood to be possible.

We remember the organizers who spent months making it happen. We remember the people whose names were never recorded, who showed up anyway.

Today we honor them.

On Women’s Equality Day, we honor the Florida women who fought to expand access to the ballot, and recognize the work that remains.

Today, an estimated 1 in 38 Florida women is unable to vote because of a prior felony conviction. Women have always helped other women find their voices, understand their rights, and participate in their communities. We can continue that legacy.

Meet Marquis McKenzie.

Marquis started with FRRC in 2014 as a volunteer. More than a decade later, he’s our Membership and Engagement Senior Manager, and the same lived experience that first brought him to this work is what he brings to it every day.

His story is the story of this movement. Returning citizens don’t just benefit from the work. They lead it. They build it. They carry it forward.

That’s what happens when you give people a real second chance: they turn around and open the door for the next person.

Proud to have you leading the way, Marquis!

Attorneys, this fight needs you!

For many returning citizens in Florida, the right to vote comes down to one barrier: outstanding fines and fees. We’re looking for pro bono attorneys to help break that barrier down, working with returning citizens to get their fines and fees converted to community service, reduced, or waived.

It’s hands-on work with a direct impact. Every case you take helps move someone closer to full participation in our democracy.

If you’re a Florida-licensed attorney ready to put your skills toward freeing the vote in Florida, we want to hear from you. Join us in the fight to remove voting barriers.

Returning citizens are ready to work, so what’s standing in their way? Systems designed to make it harder for them to be hired, even years after serving their time.

But we can change that.

Fair access to jobs is essential to not only to successful reentry, but for stronger communities for all of us. Together we can continue to remove these barriers to second chances.
