Your Question:
How do I forgive myself while still taking responsibility for my actions?

, Lexi Barruso , MEd, A-LPC/MHSP-Temp, CSAT-C says:

It’s important to acknowledge this is a big task that takes time and honoring yourself, loved ones, and recovery intentions. One practice I like is keeping a daily journal of actions done to promote healing for yourself and those affected by your addiction. For example, “Today I kept to my word by initiating our FANOS check-in and was honest about my sobriety” or “I attended a meeting/spoke with another person in recovery and shared about my urges which helped me manage my thoughts until they passed”.

Journaling like this reinforces the actions taken to take ownership of harm caused, while recognizing the efforts and actions taken each day to acknowledge what is being done differently. By taking responsibility for our actions (both harmful and healing), we are able to move towards forgiving ourselves. Begin to notice the things you’re doing right!

She's tired of living in survival mode. She wants to find peace, be present for her three daughters, and give her family a healthier future. But the cost of therapy stands in her way.

Behind every name on our waitlist is a real person with a real story. A mother working to heal from her past, break painful patterns, and become the parent she wants to be.

She's not asking someone to change her life for her. She's asking for the chance to keep doing the work

💛 Your support can make that possible.

By helping her access continued therapy, you're doing more than supporting one person's healing. You're helping a mother build healthier relationships, create a more stable home, and give her children the opportunity for a brighter future.

Your generosity can make a difference that reaches beyond one person and touches an entire family.

💛 You can change their story.

Ask the Experts!
Your Question:
How do I forgive myself while still taking responsibility for my actions?

Alonso Pool CPC says:

Wow, this is a difficult one. True self-forgiveness requires taking full ownership of your actions while actively staying out of the shame spiral. It means owning the weight of your choices without letting them permanently define your identity.
For me, that requires true remorse and repentance. Repentance is more than just feeling bad; it’s a complete 180-degree turn from your old ways. As a coach, I tend to focus less on dwelling in the past and more on where you are going. You own the true cost by acknowledging the damage, but you recognize that the past version of you made that choice, while the present version of you is evaluating it. Doing that 180 means clarifying your values, deciding who you want to be, and committing to the pivot. True responsibility isn't beating yourself up forever; it is building new boundaries, habits, and accountability so that the version of you who made that mistake no longer exists.
Forgiveness happens organically when you look at your life today and realize you are actively making different choices, while still respecting the lessons of the past and remaining humble enough to remember the dangers that can pull you back.

Ask the Experts!
Your Question:
Can you address the concept of 100% trust after betrayal? Is it possible? If I don’t feel like it is, what work do I need to do?

, Jill Pool, ACC, CPC, RC says:

What do you mean by "100% trust"? If you mean implicit trust that never questions or doubts, is that really a healthy goal?

Yes, rebuilding trust is absolutely possible when both partners are in good recovery, but healthy trust looks different than it did before. Healthy trust isn't about forgetting the past or pretending that you are immune to risk.

Marsha M. Linehan talks about the difference between Clean Mind and Clear Mind. Clean Mind focuses solely on sobriety and believes it is now immune to risk. Clear Mind remembers the addiction, recognizes risks, and makes conscious choices to protect recovery. Understanding this distinction is vital for both you and your partner.

Rebuilding trust is a process where you look for consistent integrity over time. Do your partner's actions match their words? Are they able to sit with you in your pain and demonstrate empathy? Are they making choices to protect their recovery and your relationship?

An expectation of 100% trust may mistakenly convince you that you shouldn't bring up concerns or struggles. This can lead you back to a place where you stuff your feelings and ignore red flags. As a betrayed partner in recovery, you learn how to use your voice and speak up when you have concerns. That practice doesn't stop as trust returns. When something concerns you, continuing to have those hard conversations isn't a setback—it's an essential part of rebuilding trust.
