Many seahorse species form monogamous pairs, which is extremely rare in fish. And they maintain it with a daily ritual.

At first light the female swims into the male's small territory. When they meet, both of them change color, brightening from dull camouflage to pale yellow and silver. They wrap their tails around the same holdfast, usually a stalk of seagrass, and spin around it like maypole dancers. Then they let go of the grass, keep their tails linked, and promenade across the seafloor together.

The whole thing lasts about six to ten minutes. Then she swims off to forage and he goes back to his anchor point, and they spend the rest of the day apart.

Researchers believe the greeting does two jobs. It confirms the partner is still alive and still there, and it synchronizes their reproductive cycles, so the moment the pregnant male gives birth the female can be ready with eggs again, sometimes the same day.

Pairs have been observed staying faithful even when one partner is injured or can no longer breed. If one dies, the survivor can take weeks to pair up again.

They do not live together. They just show up for each other every morning. 🤍

The third panel of the celebration of the arts mural just went up yesterday morning! The last panel community paint will be on October 24 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. It will be under Casa Que Pasa's "taco tower" across from the farmer's market in Oriental. So rain or shine!
We've had wonderful participation from all ages so far! This will be your last chance to be a part of this particular mural and "hand sign" the creator's panel that will be mounted alongside the mural!
Pamlico Arts Council is proud to be celebrating 50 years of serving our county in 2027!
