CELESTIAL EVENT TONIGHT:
Venus is passing between Earth and the Sun!
Tonight, Venus hits inferior conjunction, meaning it’s slipping right between Earth and the Sun on its orbital race around the solar system!
What does this mean for us here in Northwest Ohio?
No, it won't block the Sun: Venus is passing slightly above the Sun’s disk from our perspective, so we won't see a visible black dot (a transit) crossing the Sun today, nor will it cast a shadow over Lake Erie!
The "Night Sky Reset": If you’ve noticed Venus missing from our evening sky lately, this is why! Tonight marks its official handoff. Over the next week or two, Venus will emerge low on the eastern horizon before dawn, shifting from our "Evening Star" to our "Morning Star."
For Toledo Skywatchers: Because Venus is aligned so closely with the Sun today, do NOT try to look for it with the naked eye or binoculars right now—staring toward the Sun is extremely dangerous for your eyes!
But keep your eyes peeled in early November right before sunrise over Maumee Bay for a brilliant, ultra-thin Venus crescent in the morning sky.
Space is cool!
