Open heart surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital. Five nights near the hospital for the family. About $144 a night.

While their child’s chest was being repaired, the parents had a bed, a shower, and the privacy to rest.

17 years old. Radiation for B-cell Hodgkin lymphoma. Treatment started in August, Seattle became his second home for two months.

$1,789.52 in lodging near the treatment facility.

When treatment takes months, lodging is the bill nobody sees. Insurance covers the medicine. Somebody has to cover the roof.

What does your gift buy? It depends on the city.

$242 covered one night in Chicago.
$917 covered six days in Philadelphia for a family transferred to CHOP unexpectedly, a week of lodging they paid out of pocket when the Ronald McDonald House was full.
$1,089 covered four days in Boston pre- and post-surgery.

Same mission in every city: a bed near the hospital instead of a waiting room chair.

Yesterday’s reel showed you the 309 miles. Here’s what the miles cost.

A social worker at Seattle Children’s wrote to us about a family driving a long distance for their 1-year-old’s post-op appointments. Her ask: lodging for the night before and the day of, “for safe travel.” An emotional and financial relief for the family, so the parents could “be present and well rested to receive medical information.”

Two nights in Seattle: $351.73. We covered it.

Here’s the part we don’t say enough: we can’t keep saying yes without you. Sharing grows the mission. But every stay is a real receipt, paid from a real fund, and right now the asks are outpacing the gifts.
