As The Layne Project 4 Families continues to grow, we’ve heard a consistent theme from families and professionals:

Sometimes people are unsure where to start.
Who to contact.
Or how to navigate the right support.

And honestly — that matters.

Because when families are navigating separation, co-parenting challenges, supervised services, court involvement, or crisis…
clarity matters.

That’s why we are actively working to strengthen the systems surrounding family support — improving communication flow, accessibility, and connection points for families and referral partners alike.

Part of that work includes building “Rosie” — a guided front-door support system designed to help families connect to the right services more clearly, efficiently, and intentionally.

Not to replace human connection.
But to help families reach support more easily during difficult moments.

Because safeguarding childhoods is not just about providing services.

It is also about building systems that feel easier to navigate when life feels overwhelming.

Kansas has Family Resource Centers because families deserve support before challenges become crises.

But there’s still an important conversation that needs more attention:

What support exists specifically for families navigating separation, divorce, and co-parenting conflict?

Because for many children, parental separation is not just a legal transition.

It’s an emotional, relational, logistical, and developmental one too.

And too often, families are left trying to navigate:

• court systems

• parenting transitions

• communication breakdowns

• school concerns

• mental health needs

• supervised parenting time

• financial strain

• and overwhelming stress…

…across disconnected systems that were never truly designed to work together.

The reality is:

high-conflict family transitions impact far more than just the parents.

They impact children.

Schools.

Courts.

Therapists.

Community resources.

And entire support systems.

Kansas Family Resource Centers were designed to strengthen protective factors, reduce barriers, and increase family well-being.

And I believe there is tremendous opportunity for Kansas to continue expanding what family-centered support can look like for families experiencing separation and court involvement.

Not every family needs the same thing.

Some need parenting support.

Some need therapy.

Some need supervised services.

Some need help navigating systems.

Some simply need a place to start.

But many families need earlier, coordinated, child-centered support before conflict escalates into deeper crisis.

Because safeguarding childhoods is not just about intervention.

“What works for one family may not work for all.”

That sounds simple.

But in systems involving separation, co-parenting, schools, courts, therapists, and child-focused professionals…
we often forget it.

There is no one-size-fits-all co-parenting plan.
No universal communication style.
No perfect intervention.

Some families need mediation.
Some need structure.
Some need education.
Some need therapy.
Some need coaching.
Some need slower conversations and stronger boundaries.
Some simply need one adult willing to step out of the tornado first.

The goal is not creating identical families.

The goal is creating healthier outcomes for children.

That requires curiosity.
Flexibility.
Humility.
And systems that can respond to the actual needs of families — not just the systems we already built.

Because safeguarding childhoods is not about forcing families into a mold.

One of the most overlooked realities in education is this:

Schools are often navigating family separation right alongside the child.

And many educators are doing it without clear guidance, systems, or support.

I recently reviewed a school resource focused on supporting children with separated parents, and honestly… this matters more than people realize.

Because children do better when the adults around them create consistency, clarity, and emotional safety.

Not perfection.
Not pretending conflict does not exist.
But stability.

Simple practices can make a significant difference:
• ensuring both parents with parental responsibility receive communication
• maintaining neutrality
• creating consistent points of contact
• reducing the likelihood that schools become caught in the middle of conflict
• keeping the focus where it belongs — on the child

Schools should not be forced into the role of mediator between parents.

But they do need systems, language, and policies that help staff navigate these situations thoughtfully and fairly.

Family separation is not just a “family issue.”
It is often an educational, emotional, behavioral, and systems issue too.
