Today, the Brethren of Odenton Lodge No. 209 continued a tradition that has become a meaningful part of our Masonic year by worshiping together at Baldwin Methodist Church in observance of St. John’s Day.
The tradition of Masons attending church on St. John’s Day dates back hundreds of years to the earliest stonemasons’ guilds of Europe. These craftsmen honored St. John the Baptist, whose feast day is celebrated on June 24, by gathering for worship, fellowship and thanksgiving. St. John the Baptist’s feast falls near the beginning of summer, while St. John the Evangelist is celebrated on December 27, just after the beginning of winter. Together, the two St. Johns symbolize the cycle of the seasons and remind Masons to seek light, balance and continual growth throughout every stage of life.
As Freemasonry evolved, this custom was carried forward as a reminder that while Freemasonry is not a religion, it encourages every Mason to practice his faith and strive to live a life of virtue, integrity and service.
For the past several years, our lodge has been honored to continue this tradition alongside the congregation of Baldwin Methodist Church. We are grateful for their warm hospitality and fellowship, and we thank everyone who joined us as we celebrated our shared commitment to faith, community and brotherly love.
