Have you met BVAS host and Volunteer of the Month for September, Stevie? She is often at the Nature Center Saturday afternoons. A local geologist, she has a passion for the natural environment. Stevie shared, “My favorite part about volunteering at the Buena Vista Lagoon Nature Center is getting the opportunity to share my knowledge of our local watershed with visitors and helping people better understand the geology and natural processes that shape the area.”
Outside of volunteering, she enjoys hiking, landscape photography, and just spending time outdoors. Thank you, Stevie!

Do you love spending time on the beach or the water? Share the love with our coastal birds by giving them the space they need.
Here are some easy ways we can all be good shorebird stewards:
1. Give birds plenty of space. Keep your distance from roped-off areas and avoid walking through spaces where you see birds feeding, resting, or nesting.
2. Leash your dog. If pets are permitted on the beach, keep them leashed and away from birds. To a tiny shorebird, a dog looks like a predator.
3. Pick up your trash. Food scraps attract predators that can attack nests and young birds, and litter can also harm birds if they eat it or become entangled.

Lots of fun today at Preschool Storytime, where we explored with water! We “painted” the back patio with water and experimented with objects sinking or floating. And then we took a walk out to the dock, under the shade of the Sycamores and Live Oaks.

Join us Monday, August 23, at 10:00 a.m., for Preschool Storytime. It’s all about WATER this month! We will read, sing, and explore the properties of water, see what sinks or floats, and walk the nature trail to the pond.

Please pass the word to you friends and neighbors — we meet the 4th Monday of each month at the nature center.

It’s already time for fall migration! Birds will be on the move to their winter homes, and need our help. Let’s work together to keep the night sky as dark and natural as possible so they can rely on the stars and their instincts to guide them. Use this simple guide … for the birds.

The East Dock is slowly flooding as the water level in the lagoon rises this summer. The water backs up from landscape watering up stream, and the beach sand blocks the mouth of the lagoon opening. But the trail is still dry! Come and enjoy a walk around the pond soon.
