At Kid’s Nature Clubhouse on Sunday June 14th – We’re all a flutter about Butterflies!
Join us at 11:00 to make yarn wrap butterflies and learn about a few of our native butterfly species.
Out on the trail, starting at 11:30, we’ll search for good insect habitat and hope to see some butterflies flutter by.

Families with school-aged children are welcome to join us at the Nature Center for our free monthly Clubhouse. There will not be a Clubhouse in July, but we’ll see you at the next one on August 9.

UC Professor Brittney Beck led 12 students in a session of the Conservation Leadership Naturalist Course yesterday at Buena Vista Lagoon and Nature Center. They learned about the lagoon ecosystem, took some water samples, and completed a “macroblitz” using iNaturalist.
Anyone care to ID all these creatures?

The water in the BV Lagoon is rising, and that means Duckweed! Look along the south side of the nature trail to see where it’s especially thick.

Calscape says—
Lemna minor (Common Duckweed) is native throughout most of Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, occurring where freshwater ponds and slow-moving streams occur. It is a floating freshwater aquatic plant with one, two, or three leaves each, with a single root hanging in the water.

Several BVAS Garden Crew members attended a presentation in Balboa Park recently. “Tony” Santore talked about the importance of native plants at the “Crime Pays but Botany Doesn’t” lecture at the California Native Plant Society’s San Diego Chapter meeting. Tony (Joey) was a great speaker and we all learned a lot!

Want to learn more about planting natives species? Come join the Garden Crew any Monday, 9:00-11:00, at the Nature Center.

Nancy Parker is the BVAS Volunteer of the Month for June!
Nancy has a business degree from CSUSM and worked in sales and marketing throughout San Diego. Now that she is retired, she is pursuing her passions. Her love for pollinators and native plants drew her to volunteer with the Monday Garden Crew in July, 2025. On the recommendation of others, she soon joined the Nature Guides and signed up to help lead student field trip groups. Nancy said, “It’s a joy to spend time with visitors and volunteers, and in nature. I can’t believe how much there is to learn about native plants and animals!” BVAS is so fortunate to have you as a volunteer, Nancy.
