Scaling automation may sound simple, but it isn't.

At next Thursday's (10 September) SLAS Meet-Up in Leiden, Kenny van Kampen, PhD (ReGEN Biomedical) and Michelle Vandeloo (Cradle) will share real-world lessons from scaling automated workflows across very different applications.

Vandeloo will take us through her company’s automation journey from utilizing a single benchtop Opentrons liquid handler to building high-throughput workflows designed to keep data quality pace with data quantity.

“Automation, both the physical lab and in the data and sample tracking pipelines, ensures that our data quality keeps up with data quantity.”

Van Kampen will explore what it takes to scale microtissue production using robotics and automated workflows with a focus on reproducibility, traceability and industrial-scale manufacturing.

Join us at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center to hear both perspectives followed by a networking apero and the opportunity to take self-guided tours of the Center.

Registration is free! Learn more about the program and reserve your spot in the link in comments.

Up-and-Coming Innovations 🤝 The Right People = Innovation Ave for Startups

Designed specifically for emerging companies within the life sciences, laboratory automation and technology space, Innovation AveNEW gives startups something that can be difficult to build on their own: visibility.

Selected companies receive a complimentary kiosk on the SLAS2027 exhibition floor, travel and lodging for two representatives, access to thousands of researchers and purchasing decision-makers, mentorship, networking opportunities and additional opportunities to promote their company before, during and after the conference.

And there’s more: participating startups can opt in to compete for the $5,000 SLAS Ignite Award, putting their company, technology and growth potential in front of an expert panel.

But don't just take our word for it. Hear what SLAS2026 Innovation AveNEW participant and SLAS Ignite Award winner, Colin Cook of XDemics, had to say about his experience:

"There was such a buzz and a constant flux of prospective customer, executives and researchers coming by to talk shop and see what was new."

Your innovation deserves an audience and Innovation AveNEW can help you find it. SLAS2027 applications are due Monday, September 14. Learn more and apply at the link in the first comment.

Long-term sample traceability starts with durable identification. 🧪

Across sample-intensive laboratory applications, including biobanking, drug discovery, and cell and gene therapy, reliable sample identification is essential for maintaining traceability throughout processing, storage, and analysis. As samples move through demanding environments, traditional labels can peel, fade, or degrade.

The Scinomix SmartScribe Tube Laser Etcher uses precision laser technology to create high-contrast identifiers directly onto tubes. Its permanent markings are resistant to degradation, helping labs maintain traceability throughout the sample lifecycle.

❄️ Withstands extreme storage conditions and harsh handling processes
⏱️ Reduces time and costs associated with label consumables
🧪 Compatible with a wide range of etchable tubes from multiple manufacturers
⚙️ Integrates seamlessly into existing workflows

What could you accomplish with up to $100,000 in research funding over two years?

The 2027 SLAS Graduate Education Fellowship Grant is designed to help promising graduate students pursue the research that matters most with up to $50,000 per year for two years to support their work.

If you're a graduate student enrolled in a program related to high-throughput screening, quantitative biosciences and/or drug discovery, this is an opportunity to secure significant research funding while building valuable connections and visibility within the laboratory science community.

And the benefits extend beyond funding. Recipients can also gain:
🔵 The opportunity to publish research in SLAS Discovery or SLAS Technology open access journals
🟢 Career mentoring to help navigate the next stage of your scientific career
⚫ Professional visibility through a recipient spotlight article and guest appearance on the SLAS New Matter Podcast
🔵 Recognition at the SLAS2027 International Conference and Exhibition

Your research could shape the future of laboratory science. Don't let funding stand in the way.

Happy First Day of Registration to all who celebrate!

That’s right, you can now reserve your spot for the SLAS2027 International Conference & Exhibition, happening January 30–February 3 in San Diego, CA. And with a theme like Momentum: Accelerating Discovery through Automation, Innovation and Collaboration, we figured there’s no better time to get things moving.

While we could go on (and on…and on) about everything happening at , but instead, here is a short list of the things we’re especially looking forward to:

🔴An education program built to keep discovery moving. Program Co-Chairs Joe de Rutte (Partillion Bioscience) and Julea Vlassakis (Rice University), along with their committee, have put together an engaging lineup of sessions across eight educational tracks plus a dedicated Sample Management mini-track.
🟣Two incredible keynote speakers. Cigall Kadoch (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) and Wendy Young (Google Ventures) will bring thought-provoking perspectives to the Main Stage on Monday and Wednesday.
⚫Our biggest exhibition yet. Explore the latest products, technologies and services, connect with innovators and colleagues, and share ideas with a global community of researchers, sample managers, data engineers, laboratory automation users and more.
🔴Get a head start. Arrive early to expand your skillset and your mind via Short Courses on Saturday and Sunday, the Technology Provider Showcase at Thermo Fisher on Saturday afternoon or the Thrive in Science: Women’s Leadership Forum on Sunday.

And yes, we could keep going, but it’s Monday morning and we realize you probably have a week to get started.

Consider this your official nudge to get some momentum going and register for . SLAS Members can save through November 2, and everyone can take advantage of early bird rates through December 7. Full details are available on the SLAS2027 website linked in the first comment.
