For years, schools have been told they must choose between focusing on academics or focusing on social and emotional learning. Research continues to show that’s a false choice.
A new large-scale analysis of more than 33,000 students found that students participating in schoolwide SEL programs not only strengthened their social and emotional skills, but also showed measurable gains in academic achievement—including literacy and math.
One of the key findings: programs implemented consistently over time had the strongest impact.
That’s one reason schools continue to invest in programs like Lions Quest—providing structured, teacher-friendly SEL lessons that help students build self-management, communication, decision-making, and relationship skills while supporting a stronger learning environment overall.
SEL is not separate from academic success. Done well, it helps create the conditions that make academic success more possible.
