With lots of help from friends + partner organizations, our Back to School Backpack Drive was a HUGE success! Each young person received a backpack 🎒 full of supplies, headphones, water bottle, lunch box, teacher-requested supplies, and enough cash to purchase new shoes/clothes, and more!!! 'In the United States, living with a disability—or caring for someone who is—often means navigating a system that penalizes economic mobility and financial stability.

For millions of Americans, the "hidden cost" of disability is embedded in systemic structural barriers that force families and adults into impossible financial choices such as:

The Marriage Penalty: Adults who rely on Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid for essential health care face benefit cuts or complete loss of coverage if they choose to marry.

The Income Cap Tightrope: For families raising medically complex children, even a modest 1% cost-of-living raise at work can push household income over strict state thresholds, threatening critical Medicaid waivers that pay for specialized nursing and life-support equipment.

At PlayMakers, young people don’t just perform a show. They help create it!

Participants ages 6–18 will work together to develop an original production, create characters and scenes, design costumes, and bring their ideas to the stage, all with support from older student leaders and professional theater instructors.

Historic opioid settlements were supposed to be a lifeline for underserved communities. But much of that money is flowing to law enforcement.

More than a dozen local law enforcement agencies across the country have used opioid settlement money to procure Flock cameras and other AI-powered automated license plate readers (ALPRs), an investigation by Mother Jones has found.

“As somebody who has had family members directly affected by the opioid crisis, I find the use of these funds absolutely disgusting,” said Harrison York, a 25-year-old electrical engineering student at West Virginia University in Morgantown.

“The thing that got my family members clean were methadone services, and that’s what this opioid settlement money should be used for.”
